Hi, I really need urgent HELP!!!

Working on 300 pg book in 8 separate documents. When I try to ADD document to BOOK the message is: "file can't be added because it is in use or you don't have permission!"

I did not create master, I am new to InDesign and paid someone to do it and have been working off their initial style sheets. I am hoping their is a simple solution.

What steps did you take to make sure that the document is not currently in use? The note about permission is most likely related to your operating system and how it secures files. Are you adding this document from a read-only volume?

Thanks!!! To ensure document is not currently in use, I have just closed all InDesign documents. The original files transferred were read only. Documents I am now working with are Archive?

You do not want read-only files. Change their attributes within the filesystem.

Hi,
When I try and change attributes from READ ONLY to ARCHIVE it does not accept change: "An error occured applying attributes to the file. Access is denied".

Thank you for you assistance.

Don't know if this will help, but you might try opening the read-only document and doing a "save as" with a new name.

It looks like you might be working on a PC, but if you are working in OS X, do a "command/I" and change the Ownership & Permissions to "Read & Write"

Are you by any chance trying to open these files from a CD rather than from your hard drive? If so, don't. Copy to your HD, change attributes so they are not r/o and let us know what happens.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
