I have an ADSL line setup on my server (this is working fine on the server). I have installed ICS so that my clients can connect through the ADSL line. However they can not connect to the internet, when they try to they get a "Page cannot be displayed"

The settings on the server are:

ATM Connection Properties

ATM LAN Emulation - Enabled
ATM Call Manager - Enabled

ICS Enabled for Local Area Connection

Local Area Connection

Client for Microsoft Networks - Enabled
File And Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks - Enabled
TCP/IP Settings

Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.0.1
DNS Server 192.168.0.1

A ipconfig /all shows:

The clients can succesfully ping the server and access files from it.

I dont have a firewall installed at the moment.

A tracert to on a client shows:

u8nable to resolve target system name

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

You have really answered your own problem.

u8nable to resolve target system name

Meaning you have a DNS problem, do you run a local DNS server at all ?

You clients cant seem to access a DNS server so they are unable to resolve addresses.

Also check that you can ping out on an IP or tracert out on an IP instead of a url.

I tried to ping 216.239.59.147 and got:

Request timed out

I tried a tracert to 216.239.59.147 and got:

1 .......... server 192.168.0.1
2 .......... request timed out
3 .......... " "
n .......... " "

I do not have a DNS server, I thought that ICS set up a pseudo DNS/DHCP servers?

Thanks for the help

Dan

Try taking the default gateway IP of the Network card on the server, just leave it blank. The 192.168.0.1 address.

I treid restarting the DHCP/DNS and ICS services as well, but this did not help.

Would this type of setup normally work?

I am really pulling my hair out on this one.

Thanks for all the help so far

Dan

No firewall, will be putting on zone alarm, when I get it working, but none at the moment.

Are the settings that I am using valid?

Thanks

Dan

Its been a while since i have used ics.

Try the following:

Internal Nic

IP: 192.168.0.1
MASK: 255.255.255.0

No DNS or GATEWAY IP, unless you are running a local DNS server.

Apply ICS to the ADSL connection.

Goto a client and release and renew the IP.

Tried that and still the same outcome.

How difficult would it be to set this up manually eg config DHCP, DNS etc..

Are there any good tutorials on the net that you can follow step by step.

Thanks a lot for the help FaiTHLeSS.

Got it, just stopped and started the ICS service again, and it started wortking.

For future reference though how difficult is it to setup properly (DHCP,DNS,NAT services) what stages do you have to go through and how long does it take.

Thanks for all thew help

Dan

If i was you, i would get rid of ICS, setup a local DNS and DHCP server on the 2000 server, which is really simple todo.

Setup the local DNS server with forwarders.

Then go out buy yourself a cheap ADSL router todo the NAT'ing for you. You will also get a firewall on the router and many other features to.

It also makes your router the 1st line of defense instead of your server.

You can however use RRAS todo the nat'ing and routing for you.

Heres a small guide i did a few years ago while in college for setting up a dhcp server.

Its pretty basic but it will give you an idea.

Setting up DNS isnt that hard either.

Also is your server running AD?

Also check out MS technet they have lots of stuff that will be very helpful to you.

Thanks.

Looked through the DHCP guide and it looks really simple to setup.

Does anyone know of a DNS setup guide on the net?

We were thinking about purchasing a ADSL router to setup a VPN, we will be connecting from:

Client

dynamic IP
windows XP
ADSL connection

to:

Server

static IP
windows 2000
ADSL

Does anyone know of a good (easy to setup/stable/<£200) router that can achieve this?

Is this what the router does:

1) initiate VPN connection from client using static ip (82.***.***.***)

2) connects to ADSL router on server side and use NAT to translate 82.***.***.*** address to 192.168.0.1 address.

Also when you setup a VPN can you logon as you would do in a normal domain, eg. enter domain user name and recieve your roaming profile on the client machine?

Thanks

Dan

Hello:
Not sure if the MULTI TECH 560 will work on ASDL but I got it working on my DSL with Static IP's and DHCP IP out in the field. Good luck

I am continuing this question on the VPN forum, thanks for all the help.
