icons disappear

I have a user who's icons disappear on his desktop. not all of them. any clues... this happens with a couple user profiles on this computer. Win7 32 bit. happens every couple weeks randomly.

Anything in these to help you. The Desktop Cleanup Wizard is not the same as in XP but it might still be running, or you have a third party imposter in its' place.

I removed the desktop cleanup wizard... we'll see if that helps... most of the vanishing icons were used everyday by the user, other useless icons remained.

Registry cleaners such as "Registry Winner" can do this, also. I had some icons that kept disappearing and finally figured out that Registry Winner was doing it.

the system is freshly reloaded. The user has restricted rights and restricted internet access. I can't find anything on the system. The only apps are MS office and Macola Progression. This is the only systems with the issue. Loigic tells me the user did something but the user is not smart enough to mess with the system. I had the same problem on a similar computer about a year ago... that user messed with everything. When he left the company I reimaged his computer and that was the end of it. I'd really not like to reimage this one but would rather get to the bottom of the problem.

There is a known issue with Windows 7 and InfraRecorder, that causes the check to get removed from the "SHOW DESKTOP ICONS" option (right click the desktop >> View >> Show Desktop Icons"...

if you do not have the above program installed, then skip to the next two points and see if there is a fix for the issue...

For whatever reason, some ID10T at Microsoft thought it a good idea to clean up our desktops for us automatically every once in a while. This includes shortcuts which are pointing to storage devices that may be removable, or network drives that disconnect when you log out.
I don't know where the link I used to discover this is right off hand, but this 'fix' is supposed to cure the issue.

Go to 'All Programs' -> 'Accessories' -> 'System Tools' -> 'Task Scheduler'
Within Task Scheduler in the left-hand pane, expand: 'Task Scheduler Library' -> 'Microsoft' -> 'Windows', then click on 'Diagnosis'.
You'll notice there is a task scheduled to run every Sunday morning at 1:00 am. In the right-hand pane, click on 'Disable'.
