Does anyone know where i can get some new icons and button images from? I have tried to download them from microsoft, but they are downloading as giffs and not .ico files, which i need.

Any ideas? Thank you for your help already.

When you are "browsing" to change the icon on a button or whatever, you point to that library and you'll be able to see and pick from all its choices. Back when winfiles was winfiles and you probably still can from the new site, down load a program called Icon Sucker (free) and another beaut from "garys software" (same site and free too) called "icon editor".
The sucker can rip through DLLs anywhere and show you the icons inside. You would not believe how many icons reside in any computer in these libraries...and the duplicates! Wow!
The icon editor is really fine and will let you monkey with any icon you choose. Winfiles had more of these little freeware programs than you could imagine, and icon libraries to boot. I haven't looked on the new site 'cause I have everything I need, but I'm sure you'll find what you need there. Gord

You can create command buttons with images. First you need to create an image linked to your bmp, etc. Next create a label with the back style property set to transparent. Then enter your text and write your appropriate event code. Size the label to be the same as the image and move it over the image. It looks better than the same old gray command buttons.

I can find that file, but when looking for icons, it will not see it then. And i cannot select 'show all files' I have tried entering the filename .ico but it still does not locate it. Any ideas? All i want is a better picture that the key to make the icon for my database lok good, surely it cannot be too hard? Thank you for your help already.

No sweat Matt, We'll forget this microsoft stuff: go and check out those downloads mentioned above...takes about 10 minutes, all free, and you'll have everything you need. Rip the icons, bitmaps, whatever out of whatever, save 'em (or modify them <- my favorite) then find them using the MS method...! Gord

I haven't tried the options above, but there's a great piece of freeware called Irfanview that will load and save just about any graphics file ,including icon files

Hi Gord,

Got it. Thanks :) An issue of copyright infringement comes up however. I suppose in-house there should be no real problem although if you are distributing apps or developing under contract, one should be aware of copyright.

Best regards,

Henr¥

Indeed Henry, so respect this please Matt, although I've downloaded free icon libraries from all over with "you name-its" icon included. I think at this point in the way things are so freely tossed about, unless you're doing things pretty nasty, most companies with a registered trademark or logo are plenty happy to have the free advertising, and the tools to get to them aren't exactly black market either. In any case though, true, true, better to err on the side of caution! Gord

Gord / Henry - the two masters of the thread!

Right - thanks to you guys my database is pretty much ready to go. I just want it too look a bit better. For example, i want it to have a shortcut icon onthe desktop, but not as an Access shortcut icon, as something else. How do i do this? I have just tried to do it through the startup option, but it hasnt worked. Any ideas? And also, Gord, im still not having any lukc obtaining that website you pointed me to that holds all the icon files. Help?

Thanks guys Thank you for your help already.

Matt, Right-click on your desktop and follow the instructions through New-Shortcut.
