I used to get proper individual icons for most of the sites stored in my favourites folder, now they have all defaulted to the standard "blue e". Why is this ? Also, can someone explain SIMPLY how to assign an icon to my own web pages please ?

Cheers

thanks I'll give it a whirl. I'm still getting the old icon !

thanks again

One more idea just hit me:

Upload the new icon as myicon.ico (or anything but favicon.ico) and then change your <link> to point to the new icon.

Ok, I think the lightbulb in my head's burned out now...

I've just uploaded a new homepage and corrected the hard return before the &quot;>
if i type the route address followed by /favicon.ico
then I can see the icon I want in all it's glory. But it doesn't register in the address box or the favs folder or anywhere else.
Tomorrow I think I shall remove the site completely from my server and re submit the lot. Lock stock & barrel.

p.s. ....it doesn't show up in the FavOrg program either

I'll post the outcome A.S.A.P
For your peace of mind as well as mine by now I think !

Cheers

After a period of seclusion, I came to the same conclusion as aperfectcircle. Rename the icon as anything other than favicon.ico and change the link to point to it.

That's it!

Tried it. No luck. Still getting the old icon, even after removing the favicon altogether from the server, and renaming the new one to myicon.ico and changing link.

I will now have to erase the lot from the server and start afresh I think. If that doesn't work , well I give up

Thanks again

On my machine it is now working perfectly as at 8:54 am!

Just got in and checked, but I don't get any icon in the address bar, or in favourites. If you two can see it OK, there must be something I'm doing wrong.

Try deleting the entry in favourites, closing down IE, opening again, go to the site and add to favourites again. I think it may well be a question of the page being cached locally or on your ISP's webcache.

Try going to Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings and click Every visit to the page. You should change this back later, or it will slow things down.

If the above doesn't work, try forcing a re-read by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on Refresh or if you feel brave you could delete temporary internet files, but of course you loose all your hard-won files!

Otherwise the cache should expire after a while, and it will reload from the site (could be a couple of days though!).

I use Webroot's cookie & cache washer, which cleans out all temp files including the index.dat file, which can't be done manually i believe? I've run the prog to erase all trace. Still no luck. I am going to update the site completely over the weekend and try from scratch. Thanks for all you help. I think at least for the time being, we can put the lid on this one. (Hurrah I hear two people shout !)
p.s. Paul, I've just asked a question on your site (Oh No !)
Nothing to do with IE either !
:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

I have erased all trace of my site from server and uploaded a new site. Completely new, with a new icon and hompage, and ITS STILL NOT THERE !

>:-<

I've just looked on my server and it is there. Just incase, I've sent it again and I've posted it outside the public_html. Don't know if that makes a difference, but I still can't get the icon to show.

I am pulling my hair out now !

I am trying for days now: I run W2000, I am absolutly possitiv, that the thing with the icons worked fine since I have 2000, 1/2 year or so.(I had 98SE before and it did not work).

What happened: I had another problem with my PC. I had to consult our &quot;experts&quot; from our highly sophisticated PC IS department. They told me, I had to run a batch in order to make things work. That da... batch changed a lot of Internet settings, no idea what exactly. Anyway my problem is still the same, and now instead I have that %#%#@ with the disappearing icons. I think it is something in the settings, Advanced settings may be. I just don't know what is different now.

I had to laugh when I read this thread. I was searching for advice on exactly the same problem I've been having and I totally sympathise with Kwunder.

Check this: I uploaded my favicon to my root directory of a brand new site I created only the other day ( When I checked it, there was my icon in both the address bar and my favourites. Hoorah.

I then went to an old site I created a year ago ( that at some point had the icon DELETED from the root directory, and had never displayed an icon in all that time. Guess what? TODAY it decides to turn up again! I was only on the site earlier and there was nothing there, and now it decides to turn up!

Then what? I went back to The Spannerheadz web site, which I had saved in my favourites and had the icon displayed, only to find that the icon has GONE!!!!

WHAT THE #+&* IS GOING ON?

Basically, forget this icon malarkey. It's obviously a (IE) browser issue that is beyond our control. The Demon

I've got the same problem. Sometimes the favicons display, sometimes they don't. It has to be IE. &quot;A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.....&quot; [morning]

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You've started the ball rolling again. I shall have to have another try at this, since I gave up after the last washout.

Thanks guys. If I'm found lying in a pile of fingernails with white hair in the morning, it's down to you !
