I used to get proper individual icons for most of the sites stored in my favourites folder, now they have all defaulted to the standard "blue e". Why is this ? Also, can someone explain SIMPLY how to assign an icon to my own web pages please ?

Cheers

To display an icon for your pages simply create a 16X16 image and save it as favicon.ico in the root directory of your website.

And if you don't want to use the default icon for your site on a certain page you can specify a different one by putting this code between the <head> and </head> tags:
<link rel=&quot;shortcut icon&quot; href=&quot;myicon.ico&quot; />

Does it have to be called favicon, as i read this on the cnet web building site, tried it with my own icon & name but I still have no icon displayed ?
:cool:

Unless you specify it with <link rel=&quot;shortcut icon&quot; href=&quot;youriconname.ico&quot; /> on the webpage it will need to be called favicon.ico.

So, if I just slip my icon into the root and rename to favicon, it should show up ?
if so, i'll give it a whirl
Thanks for the advice !

Cheers

Tried the favicon, but I'm still left with a standard &quot;blue e&quot;

Any ideas ?

Ever since I installed Netscape I don't see these icons either... I'll see if I can figure anything out and if I do I'll post it here.

Yep ! I have created a legit icon with a prog called bitmap2icon. Called the icon favicon. posted it, but still |I'm left with a blue e. In fact, maybe the problem isn't with my icon now I've renamed it to favicon, as like I said in the original question, NONE of my listed favourites show their porper icons either, just that blue e. Maybe if I can get that problem nailed, we'll see my icon show true ?

what do you think ?

Simple test, let me know your URL and I will see if it works when I try, then you'll know whether it's your computer or website.

Sorry, didn't work, are you sure it's in your root directory and has an ico extension? I would suggest you put it in the html code as previously stated, I'm not sure how the users area is referenced by the server. If you make any changes, let me know and I will have another look.

too large ?
right. I'll scale it down to 16 x 16.
How did you find out mine was 48 x 48 ?
It will take me about 1 hour

Thanks

my version of bitmat 2 icon won't go below 32 x 32. I'm still trawling the net for a free prog to do it. The online favicon editor won't work for some reason. I'll try again to find an editor..........
