We've just installed an extra 128MB ram in our iBook (500Mhz g3 128MB built in) but while there appears to be a great increase in performance, on startup it pops up an error window saying "RAM error, consult a mac technician".
In about this computer it still says 128 MB built in ram, doesn't seem to list the new ram anywhere, not even in Memory in control panels, where it now says 127mb available physical ram.
Last option is to send the ram back, but it does appear to have made a difference to the performance of the machine.
Anyone know what's happening or how to sort it?

d'oh! forgot to change that, it's OS 9.2 actually, if that changes anything! well with mac's it could well!

If you bought the RAM upgrade from a 'real' vendor (versus eBay or a friend), I suggest that you contact the vendor to request a new module. Also, make sure the chip is indeed compatible with your system. According to my source, it should be: SDRAM, PC100 • CL=2 • Non-parity • 8ns • 3.3V • 16Meg x 64.

Good luck!

Yeah, bought from Micro Warehouse, and it is indeed exactly the module specs you quote.
When it was bought my mother (who knows very little about computers) checked with them to make sure it would work.
Thanks, just wanted to check if there anyone had had this problem and there was some Mac easy fix to just tell it to shut up or anything. Contacted vendors already. just waiting to hear back.

Check to make sure that the chip is sitted correctly!!!! If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.
