Hi,

i'me having some "trouble" with our 2 brand new ibm X342 servers running on a W2k server OS.

After installing the OS (with all the m$ sp's and patches available) the server had no problems at all.

But after 2 days (without installing anything else on it) the server just froze completely (no numlock either).
I thought this could be some "bad luck" but after a day the server rebooted itself overnight. The day after it froze again.

I called IBM support but they had no clue, they just gave me the standard "run the newest patches" answer.
So i did that, but this just can't be the sollution.
Because if it is, why can't ibm write this in the server manual (they should now it by now, because w2k is out for quite some time now :)

Both servers have the same problem, and both have the IBM director card installed and they are both completely up-to-date on both hardware-patch and os-patch level.

i have installed the OS with use of the IBM-pre installation cd's as told by IBM.

Since both servers need to go "live" within a week now,
i must be certain that they are stable.

Does some one have a clue ??

all tips are welcom ;)

Is there any info in the BIOS error logs or the W2K events?
Check to see if there are any errors indicated by the light-path diags.
Do you have IBM Director loaded?

Yes, ibm director is loaded and there are no errors in
the log's.

but i think that the problem must be in the direction
of the RAID controllen working against the REMOTE MANAGEMENT ADAPTER.

Because the ibm X330 (2 new ones that arrived 2day) also with the MANAGEMENT ADAPTER are working ok.
These servers aren't equipped with a RAID controller.

Could this be the problem..??

Which Raid controller do you have?
Which slot is it in?

If it is a ServeRAID 3 or 4 it cannot go in the 66 bus
it needs to go in one of the 33's.

Hi mrbase,

U called IBM Support for help!!!, ru referring 2 IBM Support Center or 2Local IBM support in ur place of purchase.

This problem has already been rectified by IBM expert and published the fix/ resolution in the IBM Support Web Site.

Please check the link in; "
From the support page enter ur Machine Type/Model of ur Server in the "Quick Path to a Product" box and will take u directly to Support page of ur Server.

On that page select "Hints and Tips" link ---> under this page choose "Service Bulletin" under "Hints and Tips Category" ---> from the list search/ look 4 this title;

IBM e(logo)server xSeries 232, 342 - IBM Automatic Server Restart Service unexpectedly reboots.

This Tips will help u solve ur problem.

I hope I did Help U.

I have had similar problems in the past in my IBM server environment (275 servers). I have found that disabling the I2C device (as the underground guy's post indicates) is only part of the solution as it will solve your reboot problems, but not you high utilization issue. When you installed the IBM Director client, you probably selected all of the options (as I did when I first started using it). I have found that the Desktop Management Interface option is very evil, and causes (you guessed it) high utilization on the server, specifically in nonpaged memory allocation. The easiest way to test this is to stop and disable the CIM2DMI service while you are monitoring the nonpaged kernel memory statistics located in the performance tab of task manager. When you stop the service, this statistical value should drop considerably. Going forward, I have not been installing the DMI option when I install the director client, and this problem has never resurfaces. Hope this helps...MPM

Thnx Guys,

These tips are great.

I hope to have our X-series up and running soon now,
because they still are running like sh*t. And the IBM
support people didn't even know about their own fix.

Hope that my next post will be a final thnx.

Grtz

I have IBMx330 servers and I've run into exactly the same problem as you. These need to go live very shortly so I'm praying you've reached some sort of resolution. Could you please let me know what you've learned about the problem\solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am getting sick and tired of this IBM server.

I had i IBM mechanic over and all he did was a flash-BIOS update that was not available on the IBM download site.

So after downloading about 83242734982374 patches and
installing 3842347 updates a IBM mechanic runs....
another update (what else could he do).

After about 5 minutes after installing the server was
in problems again.

the mechanic left with nothing else to say than:

"I'll send a e-mail to our support desk".

They replied today by phone saying that: (hold on...this is good for a few laughs). all the problems are caused by the W2k Security Rollout package from Microsoft. So the only sollution (according to IBM) is to uninstall "some" drivers and changes made by this SR1 rollout. :)

yea..right.... i'll think next time we will buy a "good old" Dell server.

Still, all tips are welcome as this problem keeps coming back.

Grtz

xSeries 342 standard config. comes with ASMA (Adv. System Management Adaptor ) build-in in the mainboard. Having Remote Management Adaptor added to your system will of course give an added functionality that ASMA is not capable of doing.

We have xSeries 342 and had similar problem with W2K Adv. Server installed on one system and we have another one with RedHat Linux 6.2 but never had any problem with RH Linux.

For purpose of elimination, after dosing the system with all the updates necessary to have the system in stable state always end up with failure.

I suggest that you remove the Remote Management Adaptor and try to have the system running without it and then observe the behavior of the system. If ever it become stable, check the allocated resources for the RMA for any shared resources that cause the system to hang/lockup. Also, check the allocated IRQ ( default = 5) for the ASMA, change IRQ5 to IRQ10 (or to any unused IRQ# ).

Let's dig more on this problem, supply me with more information about your setup;
H/W : CPU, MEM, HDD, RAID Controller, Level of BIOS, N/w Adaptor, EXP (if any), and any added options from your sytem.
S/W : OS, Application, Antivirus etc.
N/w : Ethernet( type of Adaptor ) or Token Ring.

Let me know if you want a utility to gather all this information needed for analysis.

Ok...on youre request...here comes the "big list".
maybe a bit 2much info, but i sure hope you can help me out.
Because as i said i'me getting a bit tired of alle the
"great" IBM support advice.

Information shown above are all relevant to identify wether you have problem with H/W or S/W, but still lack solid evidence to point what really causes the problem on your system.

What's your e-mail address? I'll sent you a utility to gather log file save in the service processor of your system, event that are taking place before your system hangs, level of patches installed (just to checked wether you really need to apply those patches ).

There are patches, instead of eliminating the problem it will cause more problem. So be carefull in applying those fixes that are available, make sure you know what are the pre-requisite.

Have you tried removing Remote Supervisor Adaptor? If not, remove it and the drivers associated with the adaptor.

When you say it hangs, did you check if there's high utilization of the CPU before the system locks up.

Hello,
This is an IBM reported problem which you can solve updating the ASMP driver up to v.2.03. I think that the last published version is v.2.15. You can download this drivers from XSeries 232 support page.
You can bypass this problem disabling the "IBM automatic restart" service and the "I2C" device. The previous IBM article explains it properly.
Best regards.
Simkin

Well....the problem is FIXED NOW....

the sollution:

AFTER we had 2 IBM mechanics over that suggested that we
installed the OS wrongly they tried to do a better job.

No results -> then 2 other IBM mechanics came over and switched the mainboard of the server -> no results
After that 1 other mechanic arrived and switched ALL the loose parts in the server -> no results.

AND NOW, they finaly sent over a COMPLETE NEW IBM SERVER THAT ACTUALLY WORKS AS IT SHOULD...this can't be happening, only 6 months after the purchase we got IBM to fix the problem.

Sollution-> in the mean time i ordered 5 new servers worth over 150.000 euro's....but this time i ordered DELL :)

sorry IBM....but this is not the way we run our shop

Here's the short answer that could have fixed your problems, and will fix anyone else having similar problems:
Update BIOS to v1.07
After ensuring the RSA is connected to the ISMP via the internal cable that came with the RSA, update its firmware to v1.06.
Install the driver for the RSA.

Well...we also did that, even with support from IBM tech-guys on site.

No results...but as i told you..IBM shipped over a brand new X345 server, that is running fine at this moment.

Grtz
