I am really new to the Unix AIX and have been asked by management to find out if we can convert our current P5 Unix AIX server to a Windows based server. We are a hosptial and our HIS is changing from AIX to Windows and don't want to run out and buy a brand new server. This one is less than one year old and would like to use it. I don't think this is possible but I would like to get confirmation.

It is not possible to run any version of Microsoft Windows on a p5 server.

Hi,
As most health providers are going from hospital centric to regional setups, you may be able to talk to them, they may trade this server for 1
or more windows servers. It would not hurt to check.

Although you can't convert an AIX box to Windows, you can enable services that will allow you to see it as another file/print server either by installing/configuring SAMBA on the server or use Windows Services for UNIX on one of your Windows boxes.
What exactly is this AIX box currently running that you want to use it as Windows server?

It is currently running our Health Information System (HIS) and we are upgrading to a new Windows based Electronic Medical Record. The big issue is that the facility just purchased this server about 10 months ago and now have the opportunity to upgrade to a new product. We had considered using SAMBA and using this as a file server but it would be an expensive file server.

Is the reason this server can't be converted to Windows due to the chipset, board or what?

It cannnot be converted to Windows,However you can convert it to pLinux.(Redhat or SUSE linux).If that helps.

Windows only runs on x86/x64/AMD (don't think it runs on Itanium anymore) CPU architectures and NOT IBM Power. Power only supports AIX, Linux, and i5/OS (depending on the power revision)
