Hi, I have a ibm thinkpad 760xd laptop that has just had the hard drive reformated, but now when i power up it is displaying a disk I/O error and asking me to insert disk and press any key which is as far as i get,can anyone advise? Thanks.

Well you say it was reformatted, how was this done? was an OS put back on the system? Boot from a floppy and try to run fdisk on hard drive. Also reseat the hard drive in the laptop. get drive fitness tool from ibm website and test the drive. use the restore disks and try to restore the system to factory load.

Hi Rich,Thanks for the reply,This model laptop has no floppy drive and does not boot from cd rom? So i removed the hdd and installed into another laptop to reformat and install os again, the drive works fine in this machine, then put back in thinkpad thinking everything ok but no go,only can get disk i/o error. Also when i enter the bios it first displays a 00301 error but i can continue on and test all hardware and it tests ok.
Regards Ian.

comstek - the other laptop would need to be basically the same model - otherwise get the usual driver problem when moving Windows from one machine to another. Which operating system was installed? (if win9x/ME, can you put back into install machine, boot in safe mode, and remove everything you can from device manager & then try it again in target machine?)

Other approach you could take is to start again:-

Load drive in other laptop. wipe it and make it bootable (format x: /s /q). Now copy all the install cab files to hard drive. Put back in other machine - it should boot to dos prompt. run setup.

PS. You may need a bit more dos functionality to get the install to run, so after format /s /q, copy the contents of win9x/ME (whatever you're using) boot floppy to hard drive (ok any overwrite) - I can't remember exact bits you need, but that should do it.

Hi wolluf,Thanks for the help, the os installed is win98se and it was on a different machine i will try the method you suggest as soon as i can and let you know how i go,Thanks again,Ian.

Actually the 760D did have a floppy,it was external. First laptop I got from IBM as a field tech. 301 error is a keyboard error. try reseating the cable,if that don't work, get one from ebay, they are cheap on there.
