I have had a 60gb IBM HDD for over 2 years It is now the 4th drive as (SS) on with (SM) pioneer DVD on my systemn I also have 2x80gb Maxtor as (PM) and (PS). The IBM drive would cause windows blue screen of death on boot up, when it was the primary master, It would and still dose cause my monitor to flicker just once when the drive heads would reset it also makes a strange (neewidneewid) like noise I have beed on to hitachi they say the drive is fine, I just need to set the DMA as on. Windows settings are all fine I just need amunotion to get them to see the drive is failty under warranty. So any and all helpful comments would be great.

The IBM issue, when used as Primary may be due to the fact that IBMDOS.com(instead of Msdos.sys) and IBMBIO.com(instead of IO.sys) were "not" used during first format/partitoning.....These are Ibm's versions of DOS....that may be needed to have been used.....

Did you receive the drive with the PC? If yes, I assume that the PC is under warranty as a whole. Strip it back to its factory configuration, get it to the point where you get BSOD while booting and bring the unit to the hitachi and tell them to fix it.

If you bought the Pc from Manu. w/original discs and setup..then my first suggestion probably isn't correct...and I'll try to help you hound them.....unless you've installed/reinstalled newer drives without the Original Sys Restoration CD's......which have custom setup info for each pc........

Had you bought the thing w/2 drives and w/2 optical drives already connected or did you add one....?

If you added one optical or HDD......
Negating the fact that the hitachi help is useless.....as far as the DMA is concerned there may be settings in the BIOS which need to be changed (as far as Ultra DMA 33/66 mode) and also in the Bus Master IDE Controller in Device Manager(as far as Dual channel IDE)...."IF"...the DMA settings are unavailable in device manager......or greyed out...

Also the cabling and/or jumpers on the drive may be set wrong.......

OK I can see I should have given more info.

This PC is self built. The IBM HDD itself is still under warranty.

This System is Built around a ABIT AT7 MAX Motherboard with raid witch is not getting used at the moment on this system I have been In contact with Abit thay say that the IBM HDD could a fault, the hard drives are as above in my first post and the rest is as follows it has 2x256MB Samsung DDR 266, a AMD 1800XP, with a SCSI Raid controller from Adaptec AHA-2940UW PCI witch runs a Yamaha 24X 16X 24X SCSI CDRW Drive, Sound is from a cheep Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo 3 7.1, It allso has a AveryMedia Video Capture Card and this all runs from an Antec 330W PSU.

Hope any questions have been answered here and as before any and all help would be just great in getting this solved

This may be one of the IBM "Deathstar" drives. These are a known problem. (search Google groups for IBM Desktar hard disk problem).

Save your data and do an RMA.

While you are waiting for it to come back, purchase a PCI IDE controller board. You really are not going to be happy running an IDE hard disk as slave to an optical drive.

If you want to "prove" go back to the Hitachi or IBM web site and download there tools, Drive fitness tools. Then you can test using standard test, not quick test, It will display 0x00 and have a green screen if drive is good. If the screen is red it will Fail and give a fault code, give this to the customer support person and they will give you an RMA no questions asked,as you used their tools to verify a fault in the drive. This is all you need.

TekTippy4U: The 2 files you talk about are part of pcdos and have nothing to do with this issue. Pcdos would not be able to partition a 60 gb hard drive. And thay are not used in windows,or linux,or unix.

I'm very unfamiliar with pcdos and ibmbio.dos.....just to investigate a little......within my sys.com file I've noticed some reference to it(when in edit mode) and not sure why......
I understand what you're saying....psdos is just a completely different OS...(maybe OS/2..???)...and (HPFS???)
.....or was HPFS(high performance file system) renamed to HFS in Mac...I only know bits and pieces and never got that straight in my mind........and wasn't paying much attention way back then..
TIA
