Has anyone had problems (RMA, click of death,etc...) of their IBM HD????
Has anyone had the IBM HD stable and had no problems with it?

I have had two 60 gig Model#: IC35L060AVER07-0
fail and have had to RMA them five times each. (since February 2002)
the latest IBM tech support is upgrading one drive to a newer model (have not received it yet)

tell me your story I would like to hear the bad and the good about these drives?

I haven't used that particular drive but am a great fan of IBM deskstar, they have always ranked well with me for both performance and reliability.

I know from personnal experience that certain models and sizes (the GPX75) for one, did suffer reliabilty problems.
I believe that the models that were effected have manufacture dates in early 2001? but this information is from memory so I cannot be absolutely sure.
From what I can gather all newer drives are uneffected and IBM's generally are no better or worse in the reliability stakes than others. Martin

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Two 40GB Deskstar60 GXP have been running next to a Maxtor almost 24/7 for a year now without any problems. They're of course well ventilated and the power supply is a little oversized.

Actually, I would have never guessed HDs could be such a source of problems. I've got 3 computers with 6 HDDs and all trouble was either Windows or Bios or otherwise hardware related, i.e. not thinking about the jumper settings before installing Win2000 as in my most recent case.

Even an old WD,540MB (that's MB, no typo),1994, that I got out of a salvaged desktop, still seems to work.

thread751-432142 is just one example of all the @%#^$% causes for failure.

Hi all,

I would get a Seagate barracuda IV if you have the chance and want to keep your data safe, keep it cool and it will run for years. The best made drive yet!!!!!Believe me if have seen 1000's.

Leave alone

Fujitsu !!! ;)
IBM
Samsung
WD
MAxtor Mater tua criceta fuit, et pater tuo redoluit bacarum sambucus

I have heard about the 75gxp being a major problem and some of the 60gxp having problems, I have an 80 gig 120gxp that works fine, its super fast except when it has been sitting for a while, I guess the power saving features are working. I've had some problems with it but its not the usual stuff.

In any case I would recommend the IBM 120gxp, also Western Digital all versions, my favorite drive is Maxtor, however I hear the current Maxtor drives have some problems. I would not go with Seagate Barracuda IV unless you plan to run Windows 9x series or Linux, runs slow under NTFS or fat32 under windows 2000/XP in my experience, and there is a problem in raid configurations, however it really was the quietest drive I bought and the fastest in windows 98. Samsung has been a strong solid performer. Fujitsu I have had bad luck with this brand and would not recommend it, although reviews are praising the current drives.

thanks for all the posts....
I had some real misgivings about the drives But now I don't feel as bad about them....
the latest RMA drive has been running since the end of Oct.
it has been very stable (about time...)it is a 60 gxp.
IBM is replacing the other 60 gxp with a 120 gxp and I should be getting it Monday.(after five drives)

Thanks again for the Posts
