The IBM 75 GXP reportedly had many problems that resulted in some kind of recall or rebate. I read about that months ago in a magazine.

The 60 GXP's and the 120 GXP's supposively were rebuilt to avoid the problem the 75 GXP's had. Not sure what it was though...

i used it with a small fans that sit in the cd rom bay to keep the cooling on.
and my friend didn't, and yet his still work

yes it is old news

Hungster,

What model do you have? 60 GXP, 75GXP, 120GXP, etc.??

What kind of problems are you concerned about? If you don't have the 75GXP, then you shouldn't have much to worry about. The other models have proved to be fairly reliable so far...

I am running 12 75GXPs in several sizes including 75 gig. Several of these drives have been going 18 months or more, some 24/7 in a music on hard drive system for a radio station. To date I've had no problem.

I use good power supplies in these systems and the cases I use all have fans blowing outside air over the hard drives.

So although I've read alot about problems with these drives, I haven't had any. Now if you don't mind I need to find some wood to knock on.

i agree, i use a real good power supply and fan blowing on it at all time 7/24 and no problem so far
my friend didn't use any fan, but left the case opened

these people that had problem are mostly due to power supply and cooling problem i almost sure of it

Do not buy the GXP hard drives. Mine failed within 4 months.
I have two, running in RAID 0, in a Coolermaster case with dedicated fans. The other day one crashed with no warnings.
60GB of MP3's lost. If you look hard enough, you will find IBM documentation that mentions a 333 hour limit per month for these drives. Also, IBM admits the 120GXP's should not be used in servers. I did not know about this and used the drives fairly hard, doing alot of video editing and recording. Also, I use the PC as my stereo. Now the weather is hotter and I think this put the drives over the edge. But the case alone has 4 fans with a blow-hole out the top, so I don't see how I can do much better. I will trash my other IBM drives and buy WD. As a sidenote,
I bought an IBM SCSI drive (Ultrastar) and it failed the drive fitness test from day one. I sent it back to IBM who sent one out two months later. It works, but stills fails the drive fitness test so it's tough to have confidence it will last.

hmmmm wow that's bad dude,
yes still have my IBM drive the 75GXP series, no problem so far, knock on wood

but i have many other drives, like Seagate Cheetah, WD calvar and Maxtor/Quantum IDE and SCSI, Fujitsu
so far no problem

keep my eye on my IBM
