I have to do an RMA for an 80 GB IBM Deskstar that got a few bad sectors yesterday, but I was just wondering if anybody else that may have returned one to IBM could tell me about how long it takes for the replacement to ship?

UK!
Sent a 40gig on the 12th October
They recieved it on the 14th
Had notification of the replacement being sent out on the 29th Oct.
Havn't recieved it yet, 3rd November but should be any day now!!! I hope.

Thought you knew better than to use a "DeathStar"!

It was a customer repair, I put a nice new Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 in his and a couple of days later was just about to chuck the IBM but decided to check the warranty status and discovered it was in it's last month [2thumbsup]
Besides, I genuinely believe those bad days are well and truely behind IBM (Hitachi)
The GXP60 and 75 drives are well old now! (those were the ones that used to fail)
(Hitachi) and their 7K 250 and 400 ranges are cracking good hard drives.
And I do say this from personal experience (I have had an 8mb 160GB SATA 7K250 in my system for around 9months now)
In fact anandtech voted them as the best SATA 7,200 drive.

Oh yeh!
The replacement drive still isn't here!!
UK Hitachi is only in Coventry, thats like, 40miles away from where I live.
They said it was posted last friday (a full week tomorrow)
I could have walked there and back 10 times by now lol.

you have to give these things time. I have returned a 40gb deskstar and was the last i ever purchased personally. drive is still working though; will be 2 years since the drive was replaced.

::.I may not know it all, but I still approach it with confidence to figure it out::.

It's here!
No wonder it took a week to delliver! it came from Malaysia[blush] or :~/
IBM (Hitachi Coventry UK) must be just a returns centre address.

Has someone from IBM actually told you that the disk would be replaced? Better check because they may just send it back, until it totally fails.

The drives are not made by IBM anymore. As if they ever were. IBM sold their Desktop Drive division to Hitachi. I really distrust IBM for any real support. They argue everything in the courts. I purchased an IBM computer and the modem had some kind of a settlement going on with it and they came back about 10 years later expecting me to have receipts just to get some lousy $20-$40 settlement on their defective junk. The only people that got rich were the lawyers.
