I have a second hand IBM 300PL type 6892-N8U which my son wants to play games on. It is a PIII 500 with 128mb RAM. It has onboard graphics but only 4mb and I want to add a new card. It will be PCI as I cant see how to use the AGP slot which doesnt line up with a space in the case. Does anyone know how I disable the onboard grahics so the machine will look to the new card when I buy it?

Thanks

Most boards automatically switch if they detect a card in the AGP slot - but if you can't use the AGP you had better check in the BIOS setup to see if you can switch between AGP and PCI. Can't you find a new case that does line up?

I was thinking of a Radeon 7000 and this is what info I got when I emailed tech support about it. The Radeon 7000 card will be recongnized by your system only if you disable your onboard video. Please call IBM and ask them how to disable the onboard video. Then install the Radeon 7000 card. I cant find how to ask IBM so I am putting this up for help

thanks

Having the same problem.Don't know how to get around the AGP slot problem, but if you enter BIOS,select DEVICES and I/O PORTS, then PARALLEL PORTS SETUP, then change to:-

Base I/O address to: 0378h
Mode to: Extended
Set Extended mode to: EPP

Set your graphics to PCI.

Whack your card in, switch on, confirm and save changes again in BIOS, and let it roll. It worked for me, good luck.

You won't get too much of a difference going from the onboard graphics to a Radeon 7000. Go to the Radeon 9200PCI or 9250PCI. At least you will see a change in the performance. If the games are recent, the PIII-500 will run out of power. Should you change the whole system for a better one, the Radeon 9250PCI would still be a decent performer.

I dont want to disagree but i do think that a radeon 7000 would be tons better than the onboard of a p3 IBM system as they were made for offices mostly. And its onboard video which is usually poor at best.
If i recall correctly you should be able to find the 3 pins on the motherboard, i am pretty sure it says vid or mon.
Dont mistake it for the cmos reset which is usually close to the battery. I have a manual for an IBM 300 but i am going to bed. If i can find it tomorrow i will look it up.
But these boards are pretty basic, you should be able to find it pretty easy, its 3 pins, you just move the jumper over one and leave it there.
Also, unless there is really something weird going on, you must have a spot for the agp card, but of course you have the advantage in being there, just seems weird from here that you cant install an agp card if the slot is there.
