Just got a call from a tech and they are on a new install of a CS1000E SA 5.0 system. The trouble they are having is that the I2007 sets will not get DHCP information. I2002 sets work fine. Anyone run into this yet? Is there something that needs to be changed on the DCHP scope for the I2007?

Here is the scope we use.

Scope Option 128

Nortel-i2004-A,xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:4100,1,5;xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:4100,1,5.

Scope Option 191

VLAN-A:XXX. (XXX = Vlan of sets)

i gave up on ours but our data guy used this

option 144 ascii "Nortel-i2004-A,172.16.40.102:04100,1,5."

not sure if its a fluke?

Remember if it doesn't work hit it harder

I think it has to be on the data network side. Some vlan setup or something.

We have five i2007s and they work just fine (as well as the i2002/i2004 phones).

You'll really need access to the DHCP server logs to help troubleshoot (or you'll need to run a packet capture). We've had issues from time to time with i2007 phones not presenting the proper vendor class and instead of getting an IP address from a pool configured for Nortel VoIP, it would grab an IP address from a regular PC pool leaving the phone without the DHCP option 128 information.

Deleting the DHCP lease on the DHCP server and rebooting the phone would generally resolve that problem.

Cheers!

Do you have enough IPs in the range?

go with : Converging the Data Network with Voip Fundementals doc # NN43001-260

page 239 for full dhcp info

What did I say? Trouble on the data network. Customer DHCP server had crashed and was replaced with a new server. New server did not know about existing leases and was handing out duplicate addresses. IsetResetAll and they all got new leases. All works now.

Thanks.

Speaking of DHCP strings:

FYI there is new firmware coming out that will use a new [!]Nortel-i2004-B[/!] string.

EVERY MENU OPTION is programable in the new string!! Woohoo!
Also the Nortel-i2004-A and Nortel-i2004-B strings can co-exist. So phones without the new FW will still use the 'A' string, but phones with the new FW will read BOTH the 'A' and the new 'B' string. Any parameters that are duplicated use the 'B' string if supported by the phone.

Now if you want to turn on sRPT or change PC Port Untag, you change the DHCP option, and reboot the phone. Bingo, the phone has it's new settings. Just imagine, no more walking and m,u,d,u,d,u,m,9,rel......

I just was sent a copy of the new firmware for testing....WAY COOL! This will work on 1100, 1200 and 2007 sets for now. I think the Phase 2 2004 sets is coming in the future.

Ok, I'm trying to get my i2002 phones to boot with dhcp. In my test network I have two Vlans 1=data 2=voice.

I can use partial DHCP using option 191 "VLAN-A:2." and the phones boot into the correct vlan. However when I try to boot using option 128 "Nortel-2002-A,172.15.40.1:5000,1,5." It just hangs at "Starting DHCP"

I'm using cisco 3750 switches. I'm confused because it appears that option 191 works, which means my ip helper address is working.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

Nortel-[!]2004[/!]-A,172.15.40.1:5000,1,5."

You are using 2002-A. It is ALWAYS 2004-A regardless of the phone type. That was the only IP Model they made way back when the feature was developed, and they left that in for backwards compatibility.

Unfortunately, I don't think the the new "Nortel-2004-B" string will work on the 200x phones, but will on the 11xx sets and the new 1200 series, according to what I have seen.

Correct, just the 1100s right now, and maybe the Phase 2 2000 series in the future. Definately NOT the Phase 1 and Phase 0 sets.

I'll have to check on the 1200 series. It all has to do with the firmware the set runs.

Trying to use DHCP to config Nortel i2004 phones. Setup Option 128 on W2k3 DHCP server and works great (once I figured out the option must be applied to the data VLAN too). Am trying to use Option 191 (to set voice VLAN) but it's not working. I ran trace and can see the DHCP offer include both info from Option 128 (singaling server info) as well as VLAN info from 191 but phone appears to ignore it (never releases and requests IP on voice VLAN) Phone works fine on data VLAN using DHCP (not what I want) or fine on Voice VLAN if manually configured. I've tried enclosing the option 191 in quotes and without (VLAN-A:2.) - neither help. I did find some threads suggesting a setting for auto Voice VLAN discovery must be changed to "2" but I cannot see where this is possible on our phones. A 2nd question I have is - is it possible to force the speed and duplex settings of the phone with DHCP too?

Not a good idea to force speed and duplex. These parameters would be required BEFORE any DHCP string was seen so the answer is no.
