I2004 phase 0 ntex00ba firmware upgrade 2

I have procured a couple of I2004 Phase 0 model NTEX00BA. They have never been used
but are very old. Date on box is 2003. We have a BCM 50 running R3. When I try to point the
phone to the BCM the phone displays "connecting to server" and then reboots itself.
The BCM never sees the phone trying to connect to it nor does it push the new firmware to
the phone. I was wondering if it is possible to update the ROM (firmware) manually by
emulating a BCM on a PC and having the phone pull the firmware from the PC? I found
a thread that was posted back in '06 on tek-tips.com that explains that there is a way to do this
but you have to have a .ROM upgrade tool.

I tried emailing him to get some more information but no response. I just don't have the .ROM
upgrade tool that was mentioned nor do I have any rom's for the phones. I am at this point stuck.
I really need to get these phones working if possible so that I know I didn't waste my money.
Any help that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I dislike when I receive a response like that on here too....and usually this person has the most helpful and positive responses on this site....maybe he was just having a bad day??

Try this, as I had the same problem, but I did finally get the Phase 0 i2004 phones working on my BCM on RLS3. I am on RLS 6 and they still work.

What I had to do was reboot the phone: then
-when you see Nortel Networks on the screen quickly press the softkeys under the display from left to right in sequence.
-the phone will then say :Manual Cfg:
DHCP? (0-No, 1-Yes):1
(it says 1 for yes because I DO have DHCP on my system, do you??)
OK:
DHCP: 0-Full, 1-Partial:1 (So Choose 1 for Partial)

OK:
S1 IP: 192.168.1.2 (My BCM's address)
S1 PORT: 7000
S1 ACTION: 1
S1 RETRY COUNT: 1

OK:
S2 IP: 192.168.1.2 (My BCM's address)
S2 PORT: 7000
S2 ACTION: 1
S2 RETRY COUNT: 1

OK:
VLAN? (0-No, 1-Ma, 2-Au) 0 (No Vlan on my system)

OK:
Cfg PK? (0-No, 1-Yes):0

OK:
Cfg XAS? (0-No, 1-Yes):0

Then let the phone do it's magic, it will say:
F/W Version XXXXXXX
Starting DHCP...

then after a few seconds, you should get a message to register the phone on your BCM....You may have to turn off global registration password in Element Manager for the IP phones, so you don't have to sit there and try to figure out what the password for this phone is.

If you keep experiencing problems, just keep fussing around with the DHCP settings and restarting the phone, usually one change or attempt at playing around with the DHCP settings will bring the phone up.

You haven't completely wasted your money on these phones, as I personally think they look quite nice and match the sleek late model M39XX digital phones meant for the large Options/Communication Server platforms.

Now do be warned, if you are using SIP trunks, you will not be able to use the DTMF tones for Auto Attendant Messages and IVRs and VM systems. Also the dialpad keyclicks, ringtones and handset clarity are more like an older M series phones, not as refined as the newer Silver Bezel i2004 phones...

Personally, I would use these phones in low use locations or for backup phones.

The 12XX and 11XX series phones are much better.

Will you please let me know your results and if this made your phone work? I will tell you, this phone is not very smart and not very challenging at all. If you want challenging, try messing around with a Cisco 7970 on Asterisk, I wanted to throw the phone across the room and smash it into a million pieces because its so unresponsive, unlike a Nortel IP set. Finally got it working and love "her" now. LOL

The directions which GordonKapesMZ4 provided are valid for a phase 2 (i.e. that last versions built) for the i2004. You will not get that prompt sequence on a phase 0/1 i2004. BCM will work fine with phase 2 phones but has no ability to download firmware to a phase 0/1 phone.

Either way, and other than being mildly a good looking set, its not that great of a functional set....I use it as an overflow phone to allow my calls which are on my Cisco 7970 and Avaya 9630 and my 1 Pure 1140E SIP phones to ring on my BCM in a ring group....that way I can use Call Pickup even for the Cisco or Avaya IP set. I keep the i2004 on DND and let it pick up calls for my Call Pilot.

Sorry for taking so long to get back. Gordon, no I still have had no luck in getting the phones to work. I'm just wondering if the guy that said it was possible (please reference the thread I mentioned in the beginning) really new what he was talking about. Common sense dictates though that if firmware can be put on the phone in the first place then there either has to be some software out there that will allow me to force the firmware upgrade or there should be some way for me to setup a tftp server on my pc and fool the phone into thinking that my pc is a bcm50 and then pull the firmware that way. At this point though I have not had any luck at all. Anybody's advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had to dig deep, but I found the old UFTP upgrade tool. There is a readme.txt file inside the zip that explains how it works. I havent personally used this in about 8-9 years but it should work. Link is good until 2-26.

I had a pile of old NTEX phones that I couldn't even give away a couple years ago. They make good range targets when all else fails.

I've had no problems getting these phones to work on my BCM50 rls 3 and on, I am now on 6. From the information above, I do believe I am running Release 0 phones, is that correct Biv? I listed the specs from the back of the phone above. Am I just lucky?
