I have a BCM 400 SoftWare Version 4.0.2.03 and I currently have 5 separate locations set up with I2004 IP sets. Every once and a while I get a call from my customer stating that they have one way audio over the IP sets. It seems to be random but I can repeat the issue when I make test calls. It is not always the same DN's. And also does not seem to follow any particular location. I have each location set up the same way unfortunately my customer wants to setup a 6th site with 3 more IP sets and would like a solution that can resolve the issue. I have my Jitter and Codec set to AUTO. Has anyone had this issue? Does any one know a solution? If you need more information let me know.

How do you have these ip sets connected back to your 400? Do you have VPN tunnels set up or are they directly connected through the internet? Is the one-way audio only on calls to other ip sets at the remote locations?

One-way audio is almost always caused by no return route to one of the ip sets. Once a call is established between two ip sets, the packet flow is direct from ip set to ip set so there's something not right in the network side.

Just as an aside, you can set your jitter buffer to small so it gets those packets out of there faster (unless you have a really slow network connection).

Yes I have VPN tunnel setup between locations and also a mesh network so each site can talk to one another. Network ping shows a connection between 30-40 milliseconds not a slow network issue. One way audio seems to happen internally and externally.

What are the sample rates set to? By default, all CODECS are set to 30ms. I would try to adjust these. Also, since it appears you have a nice quick network, choose G.729 as your first CODEC and then G.711u for the second. Remove all others from the list.

If it is happeneing with internal and external calls, and is intermittent, the likely culprit is one of the data switches. You will need some kind of sniffer to find which one though.

Althogh codecs can be a problem, they usually manifest themselves in the form of choppy calls, garbled voice etc. An extended period of one way audio is generally due to wrong default gateways. If it's intermittent, it is probably an infrastructure problem. Packet loss doesn't seem to be the issue here unless your ISP is having problems.

Could just be a defective handset or cord too but only if it's related to one set.

BTW, do you have other BCMs at the remote locations?
