Ok, I have an HP Pavilion xt963 with a Socket 370 Celeron 1.2Ghz CPU. I want to get rid of this POS Celeron, I know I can get a PIII but am not too sure of its max capabilities. I have done all kinds of searching on the net but cannot find any info on how to upgrade to PIII. I would like to get a Tualatin and have come across a few 1.26Ghz at a fairly decent price range. I also know I would need to get an adapter to go from a Socket 370 to a Tualatin CPU.

Can anyone tell me if they know what is the Maximum speed of PIII I can put in.

I am really big into programming and have the need for speed AND the ability to be able to do more than one thing at a time. (I have yet to find a computer that can keep up with me and the things I want to be able to do)

Please Help!!!

Thanks,

According to HP you are at the top. Recommend you get a different system unit an AMD will give you more computer for the buck.

frankly, I think it all depends on what you're trying to make the PC do...

It might be a POS HD or not enuf memory instead of the CPU holding you back...

Good hunting (and think about building a PC from scatch)

I was under the impression that you could replace a Celeron with a PIII as long as they were both the same socket. It may be that the Celeron 1.2Ghz is the maximum upgrade, but isn't there a PIII that is comparable that would be better than the Celeron technology?

Oh well, I need to get off of here, we are having tornado warnings and I really should shut down until it blows over.

Hi Jim,

Make sure if it is a T(ualatin) or a C(oppermine). A 1.2G celeron could be either. If you look for the same PIII it is just remove and install. But to me it is a bit absurd : the PIII just have 128k L1 more than a celeron and 1.2G is almost at the top now (1.4G max). PIII nowadays are way too expensive. Give yourself a good excuse to do so...

OK, I think I must be either confused or mis-informed...

I was under the impression that a Celeron processor was made for the average computer user and that it does not have the multi-tasking capabilities as a PIII.

And from experience with my other computer. I can definitely see a difference in performance. My other computer is a PIII 600Mhz with 512 L2 cache. I can do the same operations at the same speeds as I can with this Celeron 1.2Ghz with a 256 L2 cache and possibly even could do more with the PIII.

So, you can see why I feel like if I could change from a Celeron to a PIII, I should be able to do more at the same time. I am real big into programming and some of it takes alot of memory and processing. I also have a multi-tasking brain - I like to be able to do several things at one time. I want to be able to program, and surf the net, build websites, download stuff, and listen to music at the same time. As it is, I cannot even program alone without some kind of glitching at some point, let alone try to do something else at the same time. With my other computer (the PIII), I was always able to listen to music in the background while I was doing something else, whether it be programming or playing online games, or downloading, or even surfing the net. Alot of times I was doing 3 or 4 of those and not have any problems. With this Celeron, I am lucky to be able to do 2 things at the same time for any length of time cause it usually ends up glitching at some point and I end up losing something I was working on at the time.

So, from where I stand, it would not be pointless for me to want to get rid of the Celeron. What I was looking at was a PIII 1.26Ghz Tualatin with 512k L2 cache. It looks like I can get one for around $75 to $100. Which is alot cheaper than changing my MoBo to a P4.

My only problem is that I cannot find any information out there regarding the possibility of this type of switch.

My MoBo is an Asus CUW-AM/MEW-AM 2.02 with Phoenix BIOS vs: 3.02 08/24/2001

Thanks for listening.

You will not get any improvement from trying to use a P3
besides the difference in the cache, the other difference between the celeron and the P3 is the front side bus. Your mobo is a 100mhz frontside which matchs the celeron, not the P3.
So you have as much processor as you can get on that board.
