How do I set a port up so that I can monitor all traffic passing through my 4006? I am pretty sure I can, however, I don't remember the command(s) required to set a port up to do this.

The switch I am using is a Cisco 4006.

Thanks!

set span 2/1-47,3/1-34 2/48 both

so that translates too monitor ports 2/1 through 47 and ports 3/1 through 34 and send all traffic (incoming and outgoing) to port 2/48

Not a great idea , you are just going to overrun the span port if you span everything on the switch and if you are using some kind of monitoring it won't be accurate. You are taking all the traffic from all the ports and shoving down a 100 meg port, likely it will saturate the port if their is any kind of traffic at all . If your traffic is really lite then you might get away with it .

I don't believe that his question entailed anyone's opinion, moreover one based on no factual input. Only thing he wanted was a command syntax. How do you know he doesn't only have one blade of 100 meg links where he is only using 5 and has the option to use the gig interface on the supervisor? Exactly.

Obviously garbow2007, don't try and mirror 90 ports that are maxed, out of one.

Very rarely do people push 100mbps for a sustained period of time, i have been to many businesses with 300-400 employees and they barely push 40 megs across their core.

ispking, viper was only pointing out a possible side effect of trying to mirror too much traffic. it is our responsiblity to a) give the requestor what they ask for and b) let them know of any possible down sides to implementing the solution. i don't have a problem with vipers response whatsoever. you are also correct in that he may only have a small amount of traffic and thus will see no side effects, viper was simply giving the other side of the equation.

Thanks for both the technical command line and the observation regarding saturating a port with too much traffic! I appreciate both. I did in fact need the technical command, and the thought of putting too much traffic through one port!
