At the moment I have a Windows 98 Operating system on my PC. I want to learn the basics of a UNIX rapidly and keep my PC with Windows 98 as I have alot of windows based files word, excel etc. Do I have to get rid of win98? Can I get a simple version of UNIX to figure out pipes etc? Any good sites/books would also be a great help.

If you have problems with your Win98 system or are concerned about compromising it then why not consider buying a cheap second-hand system to run Linux on. Linux will run quite well on very low-spec hardware provided you give it plenty of RAM. I've a number of very good Linux systems running on 486DX2 platforms with 128MB of RAM (albeit without the GUI running) and one with the X-Windows GUI running on a low-end Pentium.

This would be cheap and you could then connect the two together to get experience with networking. You can also explore the interconnectivity between Linux and Window$ with Samba.

Pnce you have you Linux / Unix box running the best book I've ever come across on the subject is the O'Reilly book "Essential System Administration". Once you get serious you should also look at the O'Reilly book "Unix Backup and Recovery".

Cheers

Another option is to boot your win98 machine off a small distribution of linux on a floppy. That way you could stick with one machine, but the drawback is not being able to access it an win98 at the same time.

Check out this link on busybox, used to create small versions of popular executables.
With a small *nix distro it would be possible to carry your *nix in your pocket and use nearly any pc as a mini server/workstation.

Most of the major Linux distributions have methods to allow you to preserve your Windows system, while still being able to boot to Linux. I recommend you get a second hard drive (they are very cheap these days, and it doesn't need to be large), and just install Mandrake, RedHat, or (if you really want a unix-like system) Slackware ( The Linux installer will give you a bootloader that allows you to choose between Windows or Linux upon boot.

Or, if you have a CD burner and bootable CDROM on your computer, you can download a complete Linux environment from which will boot as a fully ready-to-use version of Linux, with desktop software, Unix utilities, server software, etc... So, just by booting from CD you can have Linux on your system without ever actually installing anything on your hard drive.
