I had a problem when using a new external hard drive. That was 3 weeks ago.
When I turned the HD On, Windows restarted and I had a black screen telling me that Windows\System32\System was missing or corrupted.
I had to reinstall. I did this 4 times.
This happened wether I plugged it in the USB1 or USB2 cards.
So, I decided to stop looking anyfurther for a solution to this problem and I exchanged the externel for an internal disk.
Since then, no problems.
But 15 minutes ago, I plugged a USB key.
Windows restarted and Spybot Tea Timer said that a value was added in Startup : KernelFaultCheck.
At least I did not get the black screen and did not have to reinstall.

My other USB devices:printer , scanner, mouse work perfectly.

In clear, the problem happens only with external hard drives

Thanks for any help

I wonder if there's an electrical short in that particular port?

Check that the motherboard bios is up to date.

The problem happened with my old USB1 port and with the new USB2 card. I even tried 2 USB2 cards.
The USB1 has 2 ports and USB2 has 4 ports.

The BIOS is up to date.

Thanks for the answers

We need some more info on this, so the first thing to do si,
Right Click on My Computer-> Properties -> Advanced, go down to Startup and Recovery and click on Settings.

Go down to the System Failure Area and Un-check the "Automatically Restart" option.

O.K everything. and then try to plug the USB key, hopefully you should get a blue screen with numbers right the errors and numbers down, and post them here so we can assist further.

Thank you vacunita

My excuses for the delay.

I did what you recommended.
Un-check the "Automatically Restart" option.
Pluged the USB key

Nothing bad hapened
I did'nt get a blue screen with numbers.
I kept on working without any trouble.

After 10 minutes I decided to restart.

The blue screen came on with "Please wait..." nothing else.
This screen lasted only 2 seconds
After that Windows booted normaly.

I don't understand. It did'nt act the same way as before, when I had those problems.

The fact that I un-checked the "Automatically Restart" option
could'nt have solved the freezing of the computer. Could it?

thank you

vacunita,

in your last answer to me, you asked for infos (number) on the blue screen after pluging the USB Key.

I answered that I did what you recommended and that , surprisingly, this time, there was no blue screen when I pluged the USB key.

I thaught that it was fixed,

But five minutes ago I had a blue screen but I did'nt plug any external hard drive or USB key.

It came after a CHCKDISK on C\
During the CHCKDISK many files (said corrupted) were deleted.

Here is the message on the blue screen:

" Windows has to shutdown to prevent damage to the computer

BUGCODE_USB_Driver

Does this information gives you a clue as to what could be the trouble and the fix.

During all that sequence since my problems began, it is the first time that " USB Driver" is mentioned in the blue screen messages

thank you

Look like a problem with the USB Root driver.

You might need to remove, and re-install the drivers for your USB ports.

Go into Device Manager and check the Universal Serial Bus controller branch for any exclamation points. if you see any right click on it and select Uninstall. Then Restart your machine and let it re-discover and install any devices it needs to. when its done try plugging your USB drive in again, and see what happens.

If there are no exclamation marks, then I'm not sure what could be happening.

Google however comes back with a slew of results for BUGCODE_USB_Driver something there might be of assistance.

LOL vacunita...

That's a Spanish search page...[thumbsup] to you for your brilliant English skills. I would never have known otherwise.

Why thank you. Don't know how that happened, I usually keep my Google to the American page, not the Mexican.

Its still its nice to know my writing skills are up to par just enough to not let on that English is not my first language, although technically speaking it is. 14 Years in an American school can attest to that.
