Hi
Yesterday I repaired the internet and e-mail settings in Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 and now I have Internet access but don't see the server from clients! I don’t see the server in the entire network !

Let me explain.
I have 5 clients using windows XP professional, and the server that I talking about uses 2 network adapters: the "server local connection" is used for broadband that comes from a modem/router from Verizon, (here is attached the cable that comes from the modem/router); the other second adapter (a network card attached) "local connection" card is used for network (to see the hard drives in the server). That is the setup that the last tech guy left, (even though at the beginning yesterday I though it was different order: second for Interner and first one for network, and when I setup like that yesterday, I didn’t have internet but had access to the server from clients, so that’s why I assumed the first one is for Internet because I noticed that first network adapter that comes in the mainboard has the cable that comes from the modem/router).

Well, the fact that everything was ok these days, but two days ago a new modem/router wired/wireless versalink 7500 from Verizon arrived here and I tried to connect it yesterday. In fact, two nights ago I tried to connect that new modem/router but since when I connected it I didn’t have internet access even when I repaired the internet and e-mail settings in Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2, I put the previous modem/router back, a Westell 327W. When I put it back, didn’t have any problems.

I had to go to that repair the internet and e-mail settings because the last tech guy told me that every time I change the router I had to go to those steps in order that the server update the connection with internet, otherwise I would not have internet access.

But at this time I think I went further and now I have internet and don't have the network, I mean I can't see the server in the entire network, nor acces to its hard drives!

At the beginning yesterday I didn't have internet either (no internet not access to network). But now I have internet at least after I corrected the order of the network cards since previously I had set up wrongly, as explained above. Now I have internet but I don't see the server from clients. I went to the entire network and I don't see the server!

I tried to delete an user (I have 5 clients) and reinstalled it again, just in case with the reparing settings event I would need to do it, but nothing. Insted of that when I tried to connect that deleted user, typing 'server/connectcomputer/" in explorer I see a message that I have to install a deployement Component in server. But I didn't uninstall anything.

One thing: In that repairing internet and email settings, I had choose ‘leave the firewall settings as previous’. I don't know if that could be the reason of something that is blocking to see the server from clients.

What I have to setup again. Please help me.

Are you running ISA server? If not, your configuration will be much simpler if you disable the adapter that you currently have configured to talk to the broadband and plug your new router directly into your switch, and have all communication between your server and the internet be on the same adapter as it uses to talk to your clients.

Modem <-> router <-> switch <-> server and clients.

But you probably aren't prepared to do that kind of reconfiguration. Ideally you'd have someone remote in with you and take a look at the adapters on your server and make sure things are configured properly.

Can you post the IPCONFIG /all from your server and then post the IPCONFIG /all from one of your workstations?

We should be able to tell you what needs to be fixed from that.

Thanks for your promt answer Dave

Typing in the “ ipconfig “ at the promt in the server, I see:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: (I see nothing)
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Sunbnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: (I see nothing)

Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: (I see nothing)
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Sunbnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

Typing in the “ ipconfig “ at the promt in one of the clients, I see:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: (I see nothing)
IP address: 192.168.0. XXX (here is the ip of the pc)
Sunbnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: (I see nothing)
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Sunbnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

That is what I see.

Could you please do this command on your client and on the server: "ipconfig /all"?

I need to see all the configurations there.

I assume the server is still able to get on the internet, so that means that the .1.1 network is between the server and the router, and the .0.1 network is where the clients are.

In the above re-ply, only in one the clients, I only see:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix: (I see nothing)
IP address: 192.168.0. XXX (here is the ip of the pc)
Sunbnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

Dont take account the second paragraph please

In the server, when typing: ipconfig/all, I see:

Host Name: (The name of the server)
Primary DNS suffix: ( The name of the domain).local
Node Type: unkown
IP Routing enabled: Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled: Yes
DNS Suffiz Search List: ( The name of the domain).local

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: (I see nothing)

Pyisical Address: 00-06-4F-63-A6-12
Dhcp Enabled: No
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: (I see nothing)

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1
Primary WINS Server: 192.168.1.100
Net bios over Tcpip: Disabled

In one the clients, when typing: ipconfig/all, I see:

Windows IP Configuration:

Host Name: (The name of the client that is in the USERS list in Small Business server 2003 R2)
Primary DNS suffix: ( The name of the domain).local
Node Type: unkown
IP Routing enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
DNS Suffix Search List: ( The name of the domain).local

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: (I see nothing)
Description: VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
Pyisical Address: 00-E0-4D-81-E4-CE
Dhcp Enabled: No
IP Address: 192.168.0.XXX (ip of the client)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1

Just to remind you: I have Internet access but not access to the server from the clientes.

Thanks for helping me

From a client, can you ping 192.168.0.1?

I see that WINS is misconfigured on the server. It should point to the same IP as the DNS, so you could change that in the Server Local Area connection settings.

Actually, don't configure WINS on your external adapter, only on your internal (client) one.

I pinged in the client the 192.168.0.1, and I have:

Pinging with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1: bytes=32 time=<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1: bytes=32 time=<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1: bytes=32 time=<1ms TTL=128

Ping statics for 192.168.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, maximum = 5ms, average = 1ms

You mean where I see Primary WINS Server: 192.168.1.100 ?

But I don’t see where can I change that in local area conections (in the connection 2, right?), in propierties of TCP?

Remember that before I tried to connect that modem/router, I didn’t make any changes to the adapters and worked fine like that until I made the changes only in the Server Management, in the Repair Internet and Email.

“Actually, don't configure WINS on your external adapter, only on your internal (client) one.” You mean that is not good to configure the WINS in the server and only in the client?

Thanks for keeping helping me.

On the WINS thing, I'm just pointing out that you have two adapters, and only the internet-facing one seems to be configured for WINS, and that is wrong. You should only configure WINS on one adapter, and it should be the client-facing one. To configure WINS, you go into TCP/IP props on the adapter and then choose Advanced and go to the WINS tab.

Maybe you need to go through the ICW wizard again and carefully check settings.

I'm wondering if you confused the internal/external networks when you moved from the Belkin to the other router and reversed them, and the WINS thing is making me think that maybe the 1.1 network used to be the internal one. If you ran the ICW and specified the reverse somehow, DHCP would have been configured to give the clients the 0.1 addresses and it would have looked right, but would have been wrong.

I'll ask again, do you know if the server is using ISA (Internet Security and Acceleration) firewall on it? If so, there may be issues in that config that need to be resolved, and I wouldn't be able to help you with that. Any time I set up an SBS server, I only use a single adapter to keep things simple.

What I have noticed is that when Server starts I don't see the LOG ON line at the windows on log in. Before that I used to see it, but now NO. I have User and password only, as the server would be isolated. But in the users I can see the users (the five computers clients) but they can't see the server in the network group, neither they can see the server. They only see themselves, not the server!
What do I have to do to see the Logon again in the windows of login. I think that is the problem.

From the bleachers, ShackDaddy, you're doing a great job at remote assistance but I feel some basic configuration needs to be addressed. This article spells out the configuration scenario that I for one know to be a working solution, try this motita.

And Dave, I'm starting to see your point about the simplicity of a single NIC (without ISA of course) but I feel we need to start with a known good config, then modify from there.

Best of luck motita2008. I know firsthand how frustrating first-time configuration of SBS can be, but follow this simple guide and you should be OK. There are also other scenario articles (single NIC, dynamic IP, no ISA etc.) available.
