When I remove my fax modum, WinXP stops running programs. Why?
XP starts up but most services are not running and programs will not run.

The modum is the only device I have that does not work. It's driver is not compatible with XP and there is no driver available so I wanted to remove it and use it on another machine with Win98.

I use a cable connection therefore I have an Ethernet card installed.

When I put the modum back in WinXP is fine.

Is there anything special or unusual about this modem's setup?

Does the following work?

To remove a modem.

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
On the Modems tab, click the modem you want to delete.
Click Remove.

If you type "Remove a Modem" in the "Help and Support" program while online it will throw up some articles which might give you some more ideas.

Well, I did have a Fax Printer installed and Win Xp Fax Service installed. I uninstalled both and tried again. Same results.

When I say remove the modum I'm taking the card out. When I origionally did this I uninstalled the modum in Device Manager. The second time I did not uninstall the modum. Same result though.

I also tried to replace this PCI slot with another card. No luck.

Then I put the modum back in and all is OK.

It is possible the modem hosts other devices: sound is a common one. You may have to leave it in there.
