Hey guys/gals,

I really need some help. My High speed bell sympatico connection is not working. Giving me error 678. Now why I figured it's not working is because it stopped working when I installed a spyware program to clean out adware, spyware(whatever that garbage is that gets caught in files and registery). It found something like 658 files were infected. I said yes to fix all these. However, when I went back to connect to internet this is when it stopped failing. Any ideas on what to do to fix the problem. Not sure where to begin. Is my registry corrupted. Tried to uninstall and reinstall bell sympatico software, that did not work. Did an netsh ...... to clean out memeory and restarted and that did not work. Found a site for winsock fix. Will try that tonight. But any other ideas to fix the problem. Thanks guys.

Sal

Sorry Mattwray,

It is PPoE?

Let me know if you need anything else. It is a speedstream 5200 modem. Connected with Eternet and that didn't work. Now trying with USB and same error. Hope that helps.

First off, verify that your modem is indeed synced up. Do you have a link light, I think it will say WAN or DSL?

Though I doubt that is the problem. Probably removed some of the necessary software. When you uninstall, did you verify that any directories for that program were gone and also reboot?

Thanks,

Matt Wray

Sal,
I doubt that running a spyware program cleaned up some file that you need, but I guess it is possible. What program did you say you used - Ad-Aware? If so, there should be a quarantine section when you first load the program. Go in there and click to restore the missing files and undo changes.

If that doesn't do it, post back with the following information:

1) version of Windows
2) what lights you see on your modem
3) see if you can ping the modem (I believe its IP address is 192.168.0.1, but you might want to verify that in the instructions that came with it)

Hey Mattwray,

Not sure what you mean by whether modem is synched up. I see all green lights on the modem. Except for one and I can't remember which one it is. I do have a dsl light and it is green. Bell verified that I was getting a connection from there end and I was, however, computer was just not allowing me to long in. As for the uninstall of the sofware. I don't think I removed any unnecessary files as I reinstalled the software even if I did. Or do you mean the spyware stuff?
Thanks again for your help Mattwray.

Cdogg,

I'm not sure about the quarantine thing but I will check. I don;t think I quarantined them just deleted them. I am using bulletproof I think.
As for the other info. Using Windows XP, I see lights for power, DSL and some other one. Green lights. 4 of the 5 lights are on. As for pinging. Will definitely try that. What should I do if I can ping it?

Perhaps you might want to save yourself some time by using XP's System Restore feature. Hopefully, there was a restore checkpoint saved recently before you lost your connection.

To launch system restore, go to "Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore". Before using it for the first time, you might want to read up on it here:
www.buslaw.glencoe.com/norton/online/ezine...

The good news is that if the system restore point you select doesn't help, then you can always undo the restore and come back to where you left off. However, if it doesn't work (especially if you know you chose a restore point from a time when the internet connection did work), then you need to consider that the problem might not be a Windows setting or file. Instead, it might have something to do with the connection between the modem and PC, or perhaps the modem itself.

Thanks Cdogg,

Actually I was thinking of doing that tonight. I'm hoping it does work, it will probably save me from reformatting my HD. I will also try to setup anthother p.c. to rule out whether it is the modem. Thanks again for your help.

JinRoh,

Thanks for your help, I cehck out the site with little success. Thanks again.

So spyware can really mess up the winsock if not removed cerrectly. Early versions of Ad-aware had this problem.
The later versions of Ad-aware are ok. I have used Ad-aware, Spybot S&D and Spy sweeper, all work very well.
Run the Winsock fix and use the build in PPPoE client in XP do not use outher PPPoE SW. if you have XP.

Question??

What is the model number of the 5200?? if it has a USB and ethernet port (of course depending on the model) you might have a router/modem. Which means you have to go inside the modem specify the username and password, and have the modem connect. If that is the case then all you would need to do is set your computer to DHCP and let the modem do the hard work for you (connecting and maintaining the connection). The Efficient 5100b would be an example of this and that modem assigns your machine an IP address off of it's lan, and you surf to 192.168.0.1 and punch in the connection information there on the front page.

Hope that helps a bit or steers you in the right direction.
