Well... sure, that solves the problem, but gives another one, all autocorrect words are now cancelled.
it is strange though that the "i" is not in the autocorrect list???
Select Tools > AutoCorrect Options > AutoCorrect (tab)
Enter lower case i in the Replace box half way down.
The entry will be highlighted in the list below
Press Delete
Press Close to close the dialog
If, as you say, you really don't have an AutoCorrect entry for it then I have no idea how it's done!
If you have Word 2003, you can hover over the capitalised I to get a smart tag which should give a clue (and the option to suppress it)

Replace 'i with I' is part of the normal AutoCorrect list which can be deleted. If it isn't that, it may be one of the Capitilise options (depending where you are using the 'i'. If it is, add it to the AutoCorrections Exception list.
