We have an Exabyte VXA-1 SCSI backup unit connected to an HP DL380. The problem that is occurring: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error”. We have rebooted the server and also reset the tape unit, by powering on and off. This does not seem to resolve the problem. A tape can be mounted and the volume name of the tape is detected, but it fails on the labeling.

Has anyone seen this error and can suggest a fix to this problem?

hi, sometimes this error appear when the tape unit need a clean media.
otherwise check the expires date of volume or recycle the volume to relabel media.

Thanks for the follow up. We have tried doing both of these. Do you have any other suggestions on what could we could do?

did you try to write something to the tape without networker? I mean using tar, cpio, ntbackup, etc.? (I don't know you OS).

Cheers.

Correct. As NetWorker does not use own device drivers, test the device with a OS native utility.
