Can anyone give me any ideas what the problem is. Backups worked fine before the reinstallation except for occassional nights when the server blue screened during a backup.

Many Thanks

I have been getting the same message (and some other ones, like semaphore timeout errors) since upgrading from BE7.2 to BE8.6. Backup jobs used to fail about 10% of the time in BE7.2; when I upgraded to 8.6, that jumped to about 25 or 30%; recently it has been 100%. The only thing that I can think of that has changed is that I have added a NAS device (a Maxtor MaxAttach), which necessitated the version upgrade. At first, I was backing up the server's drives and the NAS in two separate jobs. That resulted in about a 25-30% failure rate with I/O errors. Then I decided to try backing up the server's drives to the NAS with a backup-to-disk operation and then backing up the NAS to tape in a separate operation. The backup-to-disk usually worked, the tape backup would usually fail. Then, one of our mirrored SCSI hard drives on the server failed and we replaced it. Since then, all of our tape backups have failed. I've tried upgrading the SCSI adapter drivers and that hasn't helped.

To make a long story short, we are now adding another SCSI card and putting the tape drive on its own. I'll let you know if that works.

Thanks for your help.

We have managed to temporarily bypass the problem by reducing the data backed up (by zipping up old files), as the error only seemed to occur when 3.25Gb had been written to the tape.

If the new SCSI drive resolves the problem permanently, please let me.

Once again thanks

Chris Combes

has anyone found a solution to this problem. I am having the same problem about 90% of the time with 8.6 on a nt 4 server running a 2940 and an external hp 6 tape changer

I would also like to know if anyone has any ideas. I have tried just about everything i can think of.

thanks

No i dont think so. this is the only device on my bus. That is why i am so confused.

any other thoughts?

Somebody must have the answer?
I sure dont.
Me using : NT4, Backup Exec, HP Tape Drive.

I had this problem one time on a Compaq Msl5026. Basically, I re-installed Compaq drivers for the Scsi card which were
Adaptec as well as the Medium changer but left the sdlt drives using the Veritas drivers.

this error message occurs becase there is too much data being written to the tape drive and the tape drive can't cope. What you should try is to access the scsi bios of the card and turn down scsi transfer rate.

I'm currently receiving errors like this as well. Here is what I have tried: Decreased transfer rate to 10 MB, if you have a wide bus, set initiate wide negotiation to "off", set initiate sync negotiation to "off" or whatever is the equivalent negative value on your card (mine is adaptec 2940) Make sure disconnect is enabled, and that SCSI parity checking is "Off".

Next I will isolate the drive from other scsi devices such as CD Roms, and also make sure that the Jumper is removed from the termination pins on the drive if it is not the last drive or only device on the chain.

Hope this helps, it seems to be a common problem.
