...from one PC. I'm a graphic design contractor and I'm working at two different sites. Everytime I go to a site I need to have one of the IT guys come over and add me to the domain. Is there a way to do this in XP, or is there a 3rd party software to allow me to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help and/or info

Yup or use Network Device Switcher, which comes free with Toshiba laptops but works on any PC. Simple and effective.

Or get the IT guy to write it down for you, changing a domain is really quite simple.

Neither Netswitcher or the Toshiba utility will allow you to switch to another Domain without enabling the Domain join with the username and password of a member of the Domain Controller Administrator Group. This is exactly the problem you have now, and neither utility can do a thing about it in XP.

This is not necessary if you were running NT or Win2k, but there is no way around it in XP other than having your username added to the Domain Administor Group on both of the Domains.

'This is not necessary if you were running NT or Win2k' - why not? You need to join domain just like XP.

wolluf,

XP takes group policy permissions to heart. It is much more serious about enforcing Domain security than the earlier clients in every particular.

Without being made a member of the Group Domain Administrator it is not possible to un-join one domain and re-join another without the use of the username and passwword of a member of Domain Administrators. When the join is made the group policies of the Domain flow into XP and odd merge of old and new policy attributes results. XP distinguishes local policy from Domain, local administrator from Domain administrator in a much for forceful way than earlier clients.

I have a similar issue, only I go to 4 domains with my laptop!!

Im my case, I turn off the ISA firewall client when im away from base, change the method to the domain im going to, and to connect to the domain resources I get the servers ip address, and 'Run' \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx then when asked for credentils I use an account name & password setup just for me. I then access all the shared folders / printers as needed.

Interestingly, the only domain I was never able to connect to was NT 4.5 SBS. All Server 2000's I have had no problem with.

Women are like computers, you have to press a button to turn them on.

Tezzie,

You can always share the resources of a Domain, but the problem as discussed was in changing Domain membership.

Your method is essentially how XP Home users, for example, could share files and print without Domain membership.

Why don't you use dual or multiboot. Use partition Magic or OS/2 etc. It doesn't matter what OS you want to put. Funny right? But this is the only way you can solve this problem.. Of course as far as I'm concern.
