Technical User

Let me start by saying I’m a technical user, not a technical wizard. Most of the answers I see here go way over my head. With this said, Bell recently installed HMS-400 because our Meridian Mail system was at end of life. For the most part I can set up mailboxes and reset passwords. My biggest issue is the Auto Attendant, during the set up one of the reps set up a DN with voice mail that gives the caller the choice to 1) Leave a message or 2) get forwarded to an outside line out of town. This is accomplished by sending the person to a second DN that has voice mail or a second DN that autodials externally. It hasn’t worked right from day one and even though there is a message the light will not turn on.
I’m wondering if anyone knows of a supplier or vendor that gives HMS-400 and Auto Attendant training for end users.

GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE, GOOGLE IT

OLD ROLMEN WORKING ON NORTELS AND AVAYA

I checked out Global Knowledge and the courses they offer are CBT (on line Computer Based Training) but from what I see the courses are more on installing rather running it afterwards which is what I'm tasked with. Bell Canada installed CS-1000 TM, Avotus ICM and HMS-400 on our Option 81C now updated to a CS-1000 v4.5. I took a basic course in Ottawa, Ontario Canada with them for Basic Telephony and found the bulk of the course was on Voip and I was looking for simple Tip and Ring trouble shooting so it makes me gun shy that what they offer is way ahead in technology then what I need.

I don't know of a better place to learn than on the job. I've been at Nortel 30 years now, and I took my first class about two years after logging in.

I teach people all the time, generally when they are stuck at a terminal and don't want to call a vendor to be "corrected", or scared away from the terminal "to leave it up to one of our trained engineers" LOL.

Come up with a scenario, post it here. We can point you to the right answer, or resource. One, of course, is my own web site on the topic. This is a good start:

Wow a Plehora of information, Thanks Gene.
I see you have info on M2616's.
I have 8009's and M2616 thats great.
And all the LDs, I have a ton of books but it looks like you have the Reader's Digest version. More my style.

I have been learning by the seat of the pants for the last 2 years but I get the odd day that frustrates me but for the most part I really like my job and consider myself quite lucky.

Oh, for sure get my MicroMERL book set. It is known around the world. Even in the (once active) Nortel legal department :)

The books make learning this the hardest. There is, literally, a class on how to use the books. But after time, you realize there are only a few books you need. I have made that compilation and it is free for the taking. You will not find anything like it, anywhere else. I developed the first MicroMERL about 10 years ago. (Micro for Small and MERL for Meridian Electronic Reference Library)

Another thing that throws new people is not know what overlay is for what. You've seen Techs use LD20 to make changes to phones. They think they are in LD20, but the system is moving them to LD10 or LD11 behind the scenes. If you thought that LD20 was for changing digital phones, then you would open the books and realize LD20 did not have any of the prompts you were seeing on your terminal. In fact, they are located under LD11 in the books.

Enjoy. However, that HMS challenge - that adds a bigger challenge. I also have the "Hospitality" book on my files page.

Enjoy... and ask any time
