I need help with writing a barcode program.

I have to write a program that prints out a zipcode from a barcode. Then i need to be able to ask the user what zipcode he wants to use and then for the program to show the barcode. All this needs to be done in an applet.

Is there a barcode scanner to input the barcode? How does the used input the barcode?
