Hi all,
I'm very new to java and programming (about 3 hours) and don't understand how to set the PATH permanently for the jdk-6-windows-i586.exe I downloaded from the Java site earlier.

The JDK installed in C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0

1.I don't know where to get the version number to substitute <version> with.

2.When I type "cd C:\java" in the command prompt I keep getting "The system cannot find the path specified."

If anyone could let me know what I'm doing wrong I would be very greatful. Oh and I am using Xp home.

Hey sedj
thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry to be so lame but I have read the documentation and still can't find the <version> anywhere.

clicking "About" in java control panel tells me I have version 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0-b105). Is this 1.6.0-b105 the <version> they are talking about when the say:

"A typical value for PATH is:

C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_<version>\bin ?"

any help appreciated
thanks

If the installer put it at C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0 then your windows PATH to the bin folder will be C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\bin
