i need help with ASAP 2620 flash 32 mb upgrade, rom boot upgrade ERROR

I need help asap since this router is going to california tommorow and i cant seem to get the upgrade working. I have installed the new rom boot chip and new flash. The router boots up to rommon prompt. I tried to xmodem a bin but it says not enough memory everytime. I have no idea what else to do. I have tried searching online too and called cisco and left a message but no call back yet as of tonight. I tried to do disaster recovery but im not sure how to communicate it with the tftp server since it doesnt have no ip address, i just made the one up below. Does anyone know what i could do, please help me out asap.

Just to understand the situation.I will ask a few question.Are you tryng to upgrade the IOS?You mention
"ROM" this is the hardware.From what I notice,you are trying to put this image in flash "c2600-ik9o3s-mz.122-40a.bin"but I think it needs more than 8MB of flash.

Is this an upgrade or downgrade? Did you put more flash and a different image on it? Just look at the size of the IOS image and compare it to the flash module size itself. If the flash mod is plenty big, then I would say you have a bad flash...whenever I have tried loading an IOS that was too big, it would never load, with the error that the IOS is too big, not enough flash memory, or something. It will do that if the DRAM is not enough also. Try putting a smaller IOS on first, and see if it does the same thing.

yeah it does the same thing. Im upgrading from the 8mb to the 32 mb flash. I swapped out the boot rom on the motherboard too. Im trying to write a 11mb file to onboard flash of 32mbs so that shouldnt be a problem at all. I also tried to write a 4mb file size too and same thing. The flash just shows 0 no matter what so i wasnt sure if i needed to format or something.

No format is necessary---are you sure the flash mod is for a 2600 series, and not a 2600XM? If not, I would bet your flash is trash. Hey---that rhymes...sorry.lol

yeah when i do a rommon> dir flash:

I just get a error message saying nothing is on the flash.

Im thinking that this rom is junk and im going to call the company on monday and let them know about it.

Its funny how i put a 16mb flash in there and that works fine.

Its funny how i can put a 8mb flash chip in there too and that works.

**upon reading on cisco site, it seems like when doing this mod you will get a rommon> prompt like i do but then it says do the xmodem which i do and it gives a error no matter what size bin i use since the flash is zero.

my guess is this is junk. I just wanted to get input on this from other people.

I love this forum and its what made me pass my ccna exam with a 961 and lots of studying. Im not studying for my 70-270 exam microsoft which i take in 2 weeks.

This is what it says with the 32 flash chip and new rom chip in. Cannot read flash, flash is zero, and comes to a rommon> prompt which i stated above. Since it is saying zero every bin i try to send no matter what the size is says not big enough since it claims its zero.

For now i just made it have 16 mg flash now which is fine for the meantime.

Im guessing this rom chip is junk so it wont recognize the 32 flash.

Like I said---it will do the same thing if you use a flash module for a 2600XM, if you do not have an XM router! For example---if you have, say, a 2620, and you bought a flash module for a 2620XM, you get the same result.

when when my boss gave me the router he told me just to see what was on it. So when i plugged it in it came up with 2620 when it was booting up. That is why i thought it was just a 2620 and not a 2620xm. Im not even sure what the difference is between them. Im guessing this is a 2620 with just a bad rom they sent me but i cant say 100% that it is not a 2620xm.

I see---either way, looks like you'll be giving the flash back to the guy who sent it to you...but make sure they know to give you a flash module for a 2620, not a 2620XM. I went through this exact same thing...however, it could be that the module is indeed the correct one, but it's bad.

plshlpme, there may not be one, especially if it's from a 3rd party vendor---mine doesn't have a sticker, and I bought it brand new---32MB flash for my 2620XM.

i meant the router itself.. to see if its an xm or not just because he wasid that he wasnt sure above

when when my boss gave me the router he told me just to see what was on it. So when i plugged it in it came up with 2620 when it was booting up. That is why i thought it was just a 2620 and not a 2620xm. Im not even sure what the difference is between them. It's almost impossible that someone should have to do a boot rom upgrade on a 2620XM!Maybe in a few years.
I think the boot rom is OK ,but there's some special procedure after the ROM upgrade that has to be done,to make it see the flash.Can't find any info googling about rom upgrades.
Also note that the tftp dowload that he attempted wasn't successful because of the following mistake.
rommon 5 > tftp_server=1

i cant do a tftp upgrade because the router doesnt have a ip address to connect too. I was just adding one in to see if it would work and it wont. So the only solution is to xmodem which doesnt work either. I looked on cisco website and they act like its just plug and play and then use xmodem to send over the bin. Well it doesnt work for me because it thinks and says the flash is zero.

so like was said earlier.. the flash you have is probably meant for an XM unit.. which is not compatible with the non XM unit..

so you should just run it with the 8mb flash it had when you got it until you can get a 32mb flash that is specific for your hardware...
