I need help understanding how equipment signals and connects to CO trunks

Hello,

I work on paging systems which often connect to a local PBX for access to make paging calls or intercom calls. We often setup the Paging terminal as a station and simply allow the PBX to ring the system and it goes off hook to connect. This is the normal way for the Paging system to receive an incoming call and process a page.

In a current case, I need the system to be able to call out through a PBX and would like to set it up as a CO to connect to the PBX via a trunk, but so far it does not signal the PBX correctly and the PBX never answers. I would also need the PBX to then connect another trunk for a call through the PSTN. This is an unusual configuration for me where the Paging system actually reverses the normal process and makes an outgoing call.

I guess I could do the normal "station" setup and dial out that way, but I am just eager to understand the trunk connection process, if it can be explained to me.

Thanks

Maybe try giving details as to what you are trying to accomplish (i.e. why does an amp need to make a call outside?) as well the PBX model you are working with as well the Amplifier make.

Normal setup is we use an Aux Paging port, Paging card or a Trunk port.

In this case it is a Paging/Intercom system which takes a call button input from a room and places a PSTN call to an answering service to call for help, after hours when no one is available at the facility front desk. No idea what type of PBX will be involved. I just need high level explanation of trunks connecting. Loop current, ring voltage concept of a station connection is typical, and we understand that and how to implement and troubleshoot that, but the trunks are a different animal.

Ok sounds more like an Intercom system (calling station to station) then a Paging system (voice over speakers).
Intercoms would use an Analog Station port on a PBX to call outside, the station port is hotlined to an external line in the pool or your intercom system dials the outbound code then the number.
If your Intercom system has a CO port on it then it connects directly to the carriers trunk line from the street, not the PBX.

I think it depends on who/what does what after hours to make it go into a night service.
