Hi there I was given this site as a great reference site.
Which it is by the way! Anyway heres my problem......
I just started a job as a cable puller...(gotta start somewhere right?). My boss now tells me I have to learn phone systems. I would GREATLY appreciate it if some one could point me in the right direction of any good books?
We work with Nortel and BCM but for right now I just need to know Nortel. Ive only been doing this job for a month now so I know pretty much nothing about anything lol, and I realy need to learn the systems if I wanna get anywhere here and I do so please please please help me?
Thanx a bunch

I was able to educate myself on Norstar systems by reading the installer and system coordinator manuals.

The only caveat is that I have many years working with other PBX systems and telecom switches.

If you don't have the first clue of what is what, I would probably suggest that you call a vendor and see if you can get some one on one time for training.

You could also have your company flip the bill to send you to some Norstar training (info on the Nortel site).

If you are comfortable with technology and you can read the manuals without being lost, then you may be able to get yourself going.

I would, however, suggest that you get a vendor onsite to back-up the current configuration before you start to play around with it.

Last thing you need to do is bring down your company's phone system with no knowledge of bringing it back up. That would be a CLD or a CED maneuver.

I agree..
Wether your Boss can fit the bill for training is up to him..a lot of guys have had to go out and pay out of pocket for training...either way training is recommended.
Hands on is the best way..as well as the manuals..
Here is a site..click on manuals..go to Norstar
Also..I would also start w/tip and ring..meaning learning and troubleshooting a local loop line. Knowing your colour codes. Being able to use a test meter to isolate a wire trouble. This list goes on and on..as long as your dedicated. I wouldn't just jump to phone systems as there is a lot on the line when you deal with them. You must understand the physical infrasture behind these systems IE BIX terminations...TELCO..DEMARC...its like landing a job as a MASTER PLUMBER without learning the basics...you'll end up in a heap of mess and wont be able to dig yourself out.

The above is me I was typing at work.
Anyway I know how to bix and test cables and abt polarity and a lot of other little things thank you guys so much for your help I know how frustrating it is having to see ppl on a daily basis that havn't a clue what they are talking abt.
your all great. I feel like Im in quick sand the more I learn the more I realise just how little I know...lol
Thanks again guys

Everbody went through it and are still going through it..we're gluttens for punishment in this industry...and we all seem to crave more and more..hence the aid of this site.. Technology is always changing as you know it. As soon as you get a handle on one thing..they come out w/somtin else..Good Luck in your endevours..your on the right track..keep this site handy...
Sometimes I wished I took up general contracting or something....oh well..
