Hi all…
I am 48 years old graduate with a BS in Computer Science. I have almost 20 years of IT experience in a mayor oil company in South America. My experience includes just a few years in programming (Cobol, JCL, and other old extinct languages). I have no experience in the programming tool.. In my last years in the Industry I was the IT project leader for 3 mayor Reengineering projects and manage a huge budget and a team of several system analyst and programmers.. The project included the all the business processes analysis all the way to the IT architecture to support the new processes. I managed the development al the IT infrastructure of a Pilot Organization built more current technologies but I did not directly supervise these developments. In the deployment fase (to other organizations) is when I left the project and later the co. for several reasons.. I have not worked in the IT field in almost 8 years… And now I want to come back. I live in the northeast (MA) and my experience in South America and in the oil industry seems unimportant…

I would like to land a job in system analysis, business system analysis or something similar. I would not mind working in an entry level position or even as a programmer and then win my way back as software engineer.

I need help in defining a training path back to software engineering.

How can I make my resume such that, even though I have a good amount of experience in a long set of technologies, I wouldn’t mind starting at an entry-level position (specially in the medical industry)….

Thanks…

What have you been doing for the last 8 years?

Two strings walk into a bar. The first string says to the bartender: 'Bartender, I'll have a beer. u.5n$x5t?*&4ru!2[sACC~ErJ'. The second string says: 'Pardon my friend, he isn't NULL terminated'.

Considering all the age discrimination out there, this will not be easy. However--this may be a shocking suggestion--I bet the Peace Corps would love you!

The best part is that you will make lifelong friends who will be happy to help you find a new job after your two years is finished.

Yes I know it is going to be hard.... In the last 8 years I started a business with not much success... I have also work in a Customer Care Contact Centers as a day to day support...but with not much IT activities...just some SQL reporting...

... thanks

Do you want to do software development or project management?

Either, but more inclined to software development....rm

Ever consider developing shareware and try running a shareware business on the side? You could do this to start getting your name out there and getting your feet wet again with today's current technologies. I am 36 and I once ducked out of the technology field for about two years and coming back was a bit tough but with patience and persistance it can be done. This was several years ago though.

I read a report online yesterday that says more and more companies are starting to outsource their deep-coding projects, etc. I think it was from Gartner? I am saying that to say if you want to get back into the IT field today your best bet in my opinion is to learn a foreign langague and get some skills in management, etc. This is what is going to be thing here before long (according to the report).

Hope this helps,
Noble

Thanks Noble... I think is a good option.. I have been reading about the business in the web.... BTW: why the second language? (I know spanish and italian)....

Ramon

I think that the article was refering to learning the second language so that you could communicate better with the off-shore workers that would be eventually taking all our US jobs. If someone can communicate with them then they will have the upper hand in the job hunt rather than someone that cannot.
