I'm new to POS and have read all the threads in this forum (which is informative)..I guess the question that I like to verify is: Can I setup POS system by myself.

Industry: Pub/Restaurant

I do have a computer hardware/software background. The reason I'm asking the question "Can I setup POS system by myself" is that, I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I would like buy a good software and implement everything else ie hardware etc.

If someone has implemented POS system by themselves and wouldn't mind giving some pointers I'd appreciate it.

I'm looking to implement POS system on a PC. Thanks.

Sure you can.
When implementing a POS system for a restaurant the most important thing is controling staff and product. If the staff finds a hole in the system that allows them to rip off the restaurant they will! It is all about inventory control and tracking. I am partial to Aloha. Any restaraunt owner who thinks he isn't being robbed by his staff is insane. I have learned alot about the way servers and bartenders scam. The fact you have never worked with POS before may leave the system open for the scammers. Good luck.

If by setting up a system you mean installaing the software etc. on the PC's, no problem. However to configure a system and create appropriate menus, categories etc., the small investment in training from a qualified dealer is well worth the price.

Hello, I've been in the pos industry for 9 years. We use a installation set up guide line. It is very important to stage equipment in-house(min 72 hrs). Test/Review all settings. Average install should be 2-3 weeks. Including cabling, programming, ordering equipment, staging, training, install, live day and follow up meeting.

See Dinerware.com. Do yourself a favor and get the demo. You can do it all yourself and will love it. With your background your over qualified. You will also save thousands over other solutions, and have as much power and a better more robust database engine.

You can also check out CafeCartel.com. It's a powerful low cost solution. Many users don't need any technical assitance.

It's designed like most software is on the market, for example when you install Microsoft Word, you don't expect a MCP to come out and show you how to use it.

It depends on the software. The POS system I know, no way! I'm guessing if you get the right system you can. Install it on your home PC and if you can, you can, if not try another.
