Does most of the software that works in NT 4 Workstation work in Windows 2000
And is 2000 Professional in fact NT workstation
DougP
dposton@universal1.com

Everything that I have come across works from NT4 to 2K Professional. 2K Professional is the workstation version of the software. But everything that says it works for 9x/NT works fine in 2000. About the only thing I have heard is a problem is DOS/16-Bit apps. I haven't personally run many of those - a lot of people say that there are problems running them in 2K, however the ones I have run for the most part haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Hope this helps,
I had a problem installing my DC-210 camera software, but that's an isoated incident. I am sure there are a few isolated programs and such that for some reason or other won't work on 2000 Professional, but you are pretty safe with most applications and such.
John Vogel
johnvogel@homepage.com
<a href= FreeDSL Service
[To a get FREE DSL Modem WITH FREE DSL Unlimited Internet Connection click the above link :)]

Add me to the DOS problem list. We are still using an old version of our Time & Attendance software (Kronos) and it won't run under W2K, yet! Other than that, so far so good.
Well I just re-built one PC to run 2000 Profess.
I am using Kurta Digitizer Tablet for my mouse and the NT driver from their WEB site gives a Blue Screen of Death
I can go into SAFE mode.
But not sure where to remove the culprit.
I searched for the WTKURTA.SYS file which is on the BSD
and found refernces to it but not anything where I can see it's loading.

Other than that it looks pretty cool.
It did find both of my legacy printers all by itself
Lexmark 1039 and Deskjet 660C
and my Motorola modem 56K v.90
I was surfing on the Internet in no time at all
even though I had no mouse.
Beleive it or not you can get around without one
though it's NOT in anyway productive...
I have a regular MS mouse connected now for troubleshooting etc.

DougP
dposton@universal1.com

I just deleted the WTKurta Folders in the registry and that took care of it.

So far 2 problems
1. Kurta is working on 2000 drivers for they're Digitizer Tablets
2. ATI Rage Fury Pro 128 with 32 meg RAM (No drivers available yet)
Of course Standard 640x480 works with the card...
But I want 1024x768 or 1152x864
DougP
dposton@universal1.com

Have you tried the NT4 ATI driver for your video card? I couldn't find the S3 Virge DX/GX driver for w2K but the Nt4 driver worked fine. Also I have an HP 7200E series CD-Rom writer and no drivers are available for W2K yet. Any ideas?

dlyancey@btblaw.com

On ATI's WEB site under the Win 2000 suport it says there are no drivers available until March
I called and said March is a Day away...
But they had no new information.
Keep checking WEB site...

I don't want to install other drivers and have the same problem I had above with the Kurta.

Thanks
Well I was doing some investigating in the Display Icon
I noticed that Windows 2000 infact correctly Identified my Video as ATI Rage 128, but it only showed 640x480 in the resolution part.
Also I dug around and found a "List All Modes" button.
I found 35 other resoultions and Freq's (Hertz)
I choose one and clicked OK then was prompted did I want to see this mode for 15 seconds
So I did and it put all of the modes down in Settings area.
Now I have all of the resolutoins I ever wanted.
So Its just a matter of snooping around to find the different ways Win 2000 works.
So I don't need a new driver for Win 2000
DougP
dposton@universal1.com

Since installing Win2K I have lost my adaptec cd creator software, Norton antivirus, a fax monitor program, and some of the soundblaster Live card software. There were also a few problems with other programs, but the system will tell you it won't work and will send you to the site to upgrade the software if it's available. The loss of the cd writer was the biggest hit I took.

ILuvApps,
Did you call Creative Labs?
I always go direct to the Manufacturer when their product does not work.
See if they are working on Win 2000 drivers etc.
Now having been through 5 Windows Products from 3.0 until today 2000 I somethimes have heard this from a manufacturer...
Quote "Well we are not making drivers for that old product but if you buy model "xyz123" it comes with the new drivers..."
So it's a never ending battle.
I replaced 85% of my components to get to Win 2000
I wanted a new CPU which required a new Motherboard which needed new Memory, new Video.
Then Win 2000 needed an ATAPI cd-rom so I got a new 48X CD and then I though I might as well get a new sound card.
Cause that "dinosaur" full slot sound card I had, I was sure would not work, it's at least 6 years old.

So I'm done with the upgrade routine.

Next time I'll just get a new one...
If you want compatibility for your even "slightly old" peripherals, you'll be waiting a few months for drivers and patches. (I can't believe that a big partner like HP dropped the ball on almost all of their cd-writers with win2k!) Also, my IBM Thinkpad 770ED is virtually neutered by win2k. Most of the multimedia features are gone, and IBM has yet to put up new software for it. (The hibernation feature is also now a dead-switch that I have to use the power switch to revive it every time.)

Wait for Windows "Millenium" if you want any sort of backward compatibility, especially for multimedia cards and peripherals. Windows 2000 is a "now--forward" product. Be very careful in your reasons for upgrading....

The short answer Doug is NO!!! about 45% will run in windows but very few drivers for the programs will work. You are going to have upgrade many of the programs you now run in 4.0. I have had better luck with 98 programs. Hear is a key. Install all the programs you need before you upgrade then print the report that is generated before you really begin installing 2000 at a point where you can turn back. I recommend that you install a dual boot situation in two different partitions and try to install the programs first, then do the upgrade to the existing 4.0 or 98 partition then remove the new copy by editing the boot.ini.
Well since I first posted, here are my experiences with W2K Pro. I have had it now for 3 weeks or so.
I love it and have had nothing but positive experiences.
I did purchase a Retail boxed Full version of the software.
It is not an upgrade or a Beta.
I did a clean install on the Hardrive below.
I have had to completely rebuild my Home PC.
I have the following items in my PC:
I put new or old by them (new) mean's I just got it for this machine (old) I already had it in my old PI 133

Tyan 1854 Trinity 400 Motherboard Slot I & PPGA 370 (New)
InWin Chassis (computer case) (New)
PII 350 (New)
196 MegRAM (New)
ATI Rage Fury 32Meg AGP Video card (New)
13.6 gig ATA66 Maxtor Hardrive (New)
Memorex 48xCD-ROM (New)
Ensonic Sound card (New)

3.5" Floppy (unknown brand) its old...
Adaptec 2920 SCSI card (old)
HP Deskjet 660C and Lexmark 4039 Laser Printers (old)
HP 5p Flatbed Scanner (old)
Motorola 56K-V.90 Voice Surfer modem (old)
Archive Python 4 Gig DAT Tape backup. Hi,
I have also installed Win2000 Pro and have mostly no problems. Why I say mostly is, I have a BIG problem with NEC internal zip drive. It locks the whole computer and the only way out is cold reboot. It has something to do with permissions to dismount a drive. MS is issuing a fix <<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> 0256592). So I'll go there and see if it helps. One other problem. It deleted Outlook 98 personal file, with a error message "folder is not a personal folder". Luckily my backup was only couple days old and I could restore the 40 meg back. This was bizzare and scary.

I have a NT server that works good i'm adding windows 2000 accounts to the server i've added about 15 when now it says i've exceeded my computer accounts in this domain. i've tried deleting old pc account to maybe make room for the new accounts i'm creating. nothing works i only need to add two accounts i've deleted like 6 old ones what could help me. pls help me
Randyv
NWA

For those of you having problems with CD writers:

1. Go to Adaptec's set and download ASPI32.EXE and
run it. This will provide drives for your CD-RW
drive (HP anyway).

2. Adaptec says they have no intention of releasing
updates to older software. They want you to buy
the new stuff. I found shareware replacements on
web that actually perform better than Apaptec's.
