Cox Cable suggested we go to the LINKSYS Modem in lieu of their Toshiba Modem so I did two days ago. For two years, I was never dropped from the internet with the old modem, now everytime I go to check my mail I see that I am offline. What gives? All I did was remove theirs and install mine after giving them the address. It works great when it is online. Is there a setting that I need to set manually with this new modem?
It is a Linksys BEFCMU10 ver 2.0 Modem.
By the way I never installed either their software or the new software in this process and according to Cox I don't need to.
Thanks

ok, so on that connections tab under internet options. is the whole page "greyed out"? meaning could you change the setting (ie never dail a connection) if you wanted to? or could you click "set-up"? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

This window is greyed out but, When I click set-up, a window opens to internet connection wizard.
This is going to run me through setting up what is already done isn't it?
I get a little spooked by these since my network is up and running.

so do you have a network? i never seen a mention of that before.

you can delete your local area connction in network connections and run that set-up again following the directions (its self explanatory). this will reset-up the way your computer connects (IE and outlook) and may fix your issue all together. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Sorry, I didn't think that mattered. I have a win 98 machine networked with this.

My cable goes into a linksys modem, then into a linksys router which then goes to each computer. Since they are independant of each other as far as the internet is concerned, I didn't think it mattered.

I have had little success on networks, so since that is working, I would hate to lose it by redoing it. As simple as it is to most (including microsoft) I always get to a point where I don't know what to do. Cox would have me pay for an extra computer if I set it up wrong.

i have Cox too. i know what you mean. stay with what you have.

running the set-up again like i mentioned won't mess with your network as long as you have it (tcp/ip)on "obtain IP automaticly" which i think you said you did. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

If the whole of the connections page is greyed out, look under HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel and check that Connection Settings is set to 0,

Use Regedit to check this but remember to be careful.

I would also suggest checking the properties of the network card and look in power management tab and uncheck allow windows to shut down this device to save power.
If the computer shuts the network card down you would drop off the Internet and would reconnect when you tell windows to retry it would wake the lan card up.
