I just setup a Win 98 & XpPro 'network'.
Although the 98 machine can access files on the xp machine, the inverse fails. Problem is that the 98 machine will not allow me grant rights to users, although it allows me to setup shares. The error message is "Unable to view users now, try again later".

I am not using DOMAINS on the xp machine, and am wondering if I should.
Thank you all!

Can you give me more details on your network
Server, router, hub, switch or just two computers?? Knowledge is the first step to Greatness!!!

This is just 2 computers on a 100mbit connection, using a [working] cross-cable. It seems like the networking part is working since the 98 machine has no problems reading/writing to the xp machine. Also the xp machine sees the 98 machine except it cannot use any shared folders from the 98 machine as it reports an error 'likely' related to granting rights. This sounds exactly right since the 98 machine will not let me grant any rights cause it cannot ahow me the users per error described above.

what ever you log on as in the xp machine (administrator or your name) you have to log on the same on the windows 98 computer.
so what you log on as when starting xp by clicking on the pictures, you have to use the same name when typing in the network login when starting the win98 machine

It so happens that I am doing that, I'll keep this tidbit in mind for the futur. Thanks.
