one day my sound was good... then the next day i didnt have any... any ideas why?

Have you checked the volume control settings ? Perhaps something got changed (inadvertently or under the covers). Check that mute is not on the master volume control nor the individual volume controls. I had it happen once where mute got turned on on one of the controls under the covers.

whenever i try to play a song im windows media player it says:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

does this help any?

Do you get any of the Windows sounds Windows makes when something happens? If so, your card would seem to be working. You can check that by using another player and seeing if you get the same result. You can download the VLC Media Player (free) from
See if VLC will play the music. If it does, your Windows Media Player may be corrupted and you need to re-install it.

Also, what is the filetype of the songs you are trying to play? And which releases of Windows Media Player and Windows are you running?

i just bought this sound card a few months ago
im using winxp home and sometimes i get system sound like a little beep when a popup is blocked or somethin... im using windows media player 11.... so idk its a turtle beach sound card

Did you try System Restore?

Do you have the same problem if you log on as another user?

Are the Windows Audio Services running?

No Audio Device

do you gotta have the xp cd to do a system restore?
im the only account
what windows audio services

System Restore does not need a CD, look it up in the Help and Support Center program if you need further assistance.

Where you might need a CD is if you run the System File Checker program, by typing SFC /Scannow in the Start Run box.

Look in Services for the windows audio services, see what it says about whether it is running or disabled. It should be started and on automatic.

To get there type services.msc in the Start Run box.

it was on
so i stopped it and then restarted it and still no sound
could it be a driver? it says that my driver is up to date... can i uninstall it5 and let windows find the driver and do it that way?

Good idea, give it a try.

You also have the Driver Rollback feature in Device Manager.

In the Properties, (Voice and Audio) of the Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, does it say what the Default audio device is?

Is there any Bios setting referring to On-board Sound that it is trying to use rather than your Sound Card??

it says (under the audio tb) that their isnt a default set; and it wont let me click it cuz its a shaded gray section thing....

and inside the shaded thing its faint but it says no playback devices

I'm sure you have already tried updated drivers for your card or re-downloaded the current and correct driver, but the dimming you mention, sure makes me think it is a driver problem.

I suppose the Card itself may be faulty? Did Windows see it as new hardware when you removed and unistalled it in the device Manager? Are there any errors in the device Manager or the Event Viewer?

do you want me to physically take it out and then put it back in and see if windows detects it?

No, I was just wondering after you removed it from Device Manager (only), whether Windows gave you some indication that it had found new hardware and was installing drivers etc?

Of course it might pay you to check that the Card has not become dislodged from it slot due to vibration or movement of the machine.

Also, are there any errors in the device Manager or the Event Viewer?

Check the mfg's website. I saw a HP Desktop with the same symptoms. HP had an upgrade to the driver, which took care of it.

She had to remove the device in device manager, then scan for hardware changes to get the sound back, but it would not be on when she started up.

i removed it from device manager and restarted my comp and it found new hardware and installed the sound card and it installed succesfully and i restarted again... and there still isnt a default audio device... i tried to roll back to an earlier date and it would say cant go to that date everytime

According to the your thread title, you are hearing System Sounds, is that correct? Or are you only hearing sound output via the internal speaker on the Motherboard when there is some error or Bios startup?

Where are you getting the drivers from that you are using, Windows Updates, or more sensibly, the manufacturer?

Download Belarc Advisor (free) and see if its description of your Sound Card is identical to the make, serial, version, of the drivers you are installing.

Try eliminating third party interference.

Do you want to try a parallel install of Windows, just to see if sound works in a clean install?

Don't install any unnecessary programs just some sound drivers, keep the parallel installation as simple as possible.

See the paragraph in this article.

i dont have the windows xp cd.... i bought this computer when it was broke... and i fixed it... and it working fine for a few months untill this happened... can i still reinstall w/o the xp cd?

Most retail CD's are duplicates of each other, the supplied and purchased Product Key is what really matters in the case of retail versions. OEM are a different beast and are supplied for just one machine in most instances.
