Every morning I have to re-boot the exchange 5.5 server in order for some of the users to establish a network connection. This problem started with Macintosh machines (we only have two Macs out of a total of 70+ PCs)

Usually the problem is limited to 5 to 7 users and they are different users most of the times. When they can't log on to the exchange server, I just reboot the machine and they can log back on again without a problem.

When our Mac users reboot their machines, they can't log back on to the exchange server unless it is rebooted.

People are using the correct host file and can ping the server also but cannot establish a connection unless the server is rebooted.

What can be causing this problem? I really need some help! I have tried to ask some consultants also (they charged me $150 bucks!)and they told me it was a bad switch or a bad hub. I used a different port on a new switch but am still having the same issue. It can't be a bad cable also because if that were the case everyone in the organization would have had problems at the same time.

Any suggestions? Please help!

Thanks.

It is not a hub or switch problem.

It is one of several things:

1. What version of Outlook for Mac are you using? Make sure you have 2001.
2. How do the Macs connect? Check the prefs connections to see if you are using tcpip or appletalk. Use tcpip is you can. if using appletalk, that might be your trouble.
3. In the profile, are you using an fqdn for the mail server (mailserver.yourdomain.com rather than just mailserver). Does the profile's network connections settings look right?

Thanks for the reply.

- We are using Microsoft Outlook 8.2 for Macintosh.
- Protocol is TCP/IP
- The host file looks like this:
exchange CNAME mailserver.mydomain.com
mailserver.mydomain.com A 123.45.678.910
- Network connections setting are in order

The problem starts as soon as the Macs are rebooted. But the weird thing is that sometimes when we reboot the Macs they connect back to the Exchange server without any problems.

Recently we have had to reboot the server for PC to connect to the Exchange server (Almost every day!)

Please advise.

Thanks.
