using either IE7 or IE8 Beta2 I get this message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Well Firefox has no problem, works just fine. When I get this message, I click Diagnose Connection Problems, the resulting message is "windows did not detect any problem with your internet connection". I have disabled add ons, I have tried safe mode with networking, I have uninstalled and reinstalled IE7 & IE8, no help.

Thanks for any input

Have you tried clearing your Temporary Internet Files and cookies?

Does this happen on all sites, just http sites, just https sites, or on random sites?

Cheers.

If you have a firewall installed shut it off and see if IE can then connect.

It happens on all sites. I have cleared all temp files & cookies. I have turned off firewall. I have reset IE.

I can ping just fine, just am unable to open web sites.

I have tried with no add ons, same result.

What I don't understand is Firefox works perfectly. I have even uninstalled Firefox just to see if there would be a change.

I know there is a setting somewhere but browsers are not my strong point.

Thanks for your input

Perhaps your winsock service stack has become corrupted. From a command prompt run: netsh winsock reset

Cheers.

In internet explorer open Internet Options go to Advanced and uncheck enabl third party browser extensions. Then OK and restart IE and see if it makes a difference.
If you have any add on toolbars like google yahoo or live uninstall them from add remove programs as well and see if they are causing the issue.

Try the usual:
Start, Run, regsvr32 urlmon.dll, OK

If that one doesn't cure it, you could also try re-registering:
Shdocvw.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

tools connections lan settings unchecked all as found on other machine worked perfect thanks to all so much! Happy and prosperous 2009

Ok, I never did find the culprit that caused my problem, but, I did find out why when I removed and reinstalled IE7 it still had a problem. Reason is that removing IE7 using add/remove programs may not remove the entire program. So researching further I used the uninstall EI7 using spuninst.exe executable wizard in Windows. After removing with this process and then reinstalling IE7, all worked just fine, here is a link to the procedure use method 2. I hope this will help someone down the line.

Thank you all for you input

Typically, that particular situation occurs when third party security tools (antivirus/antispyware) are 'protecting' important IE dll files and registry values from being modified. An often unintended consequence is that they often prevent complete, correct intallation/uninstallation.
