I have a system backup of a 43p-150 and I tried to restore it to another 43p-150 that don't have a backup. However, when it rebooted it hangs without any code from the front panel(LCD). Is it possible to use the system backup of another RS/6000?

Hi,
Yes, it is possible. To restore AIX from backup
you have to set your box in Service Mode.
Did youo this ?
Regards Boris.

yes but after it rebooted it just hang on the part where it says "Welcome ...." with no LCD code on the front panel

How long did you wait? It takes what seems quite a while when a system is booting from a backup. Is the light for the tape device showing activity on the device?

It's a good method for cloning systems which are almost identical .... probably in your case they are not that identical

In terms of disk capacity they are the same. They differ in memory though. What other aspects should I check then to verify that the backup would work on the other system.
Also the tape does not show any activity anymore after it already rebooted only that it hangs with the description I mentioned previously.

As observed last digit displayed on the front panel before nothing is displayed anymore is 0c34 while the display at the console is stuck with "Welcome....closing stdin...". Though it seems it is hanging, there seems to be an activity on the disk. I had this problem before but with an ASCII terminal, that after restoring from backup and rebooted the console seems to be stuck on a certain display but when I telnet to the the machine I can login. I have'nt figureout that problem still. I'm guessing that maybe this problem is related to the current one.
Any inputs would is highly appreciated.

the Diagnostic Information for Multiple Bus Systems manual describes the code 0c34 - A file was selected. The console messages store in a file.
What does this mean? How then should I go through with with solution?

Can you use the tape to boot the system it was made from? Maybe there's something wrong with the tape?

You mean I have to boot or restore from the tape to the source system? I can't do that since the source system is being used...Or did I miss out some procedure before I made the system backup to be used to the target system. Like changes to the bosinst.data?

No. I'm just asking if you can boot from the tape on the system it was taken from to see if it is a good tape.

ahh ok I'll try to do that if it's free from the users. thanks

yes it will boot successfully and goes to the service mode

Ok solved the best solution is to boot through tape. I just go and press F1 while icons were shown and have the tape drive be the first boot device and everything went well on restoring from backup.

Thanks everyone for the help
