I have my old hard drive (20gbs) sitting next to me and i was wondering if i go to say bestbuy or newegg.com and buy like an 80 giger that i can by chance link them together to say i have roughly 100gigs? thanks all ~Catt

They link together with some operating systems. But with MS$ you get them usable and they are recognized on bootup, one as 20 the other as 80. You have your 100, just in 2 cans.
This is presupposing that your system can handle the 80. You may find that there are some limitations so the largest piece you can see is 32 or multiples of 32 plus remainder.
Your machine manual should help.

hey, i called dell (my company) and they said i can and it can handle the 80 and what not, but just wondering, when i purchase my harddrive (most likely newegg) do i need to buy any cables and stuff or not thanks ~Catt

You may need to buy another IDE cable, it depends on how you want to connect up your second HDD and how your system is currently setup

If you have only a HDD and a CDRW for example, you could have 2 spare connectors on either 1 or 2 of the ribbon cables

Without confusing you too much, it will prbably be best to open up your PC and post back whether you have a different cable connecting to the hard drive and another that connect to your CD drive, and also whehter you have any free connectors

Cheers

Dont the boxed items at places like best buy and circuit city come with a cable in the box?

in reply to "Without confusing you too much, it will prbably be best to open up your PC and post back whether you have a different cable connecting to the hard drive and another that connect to your CD drive, and also whehter you have any free connectors" i opened my case and i have 2 different connects one from the cd rom drive to the motherboard and another cable connecting my hard drive to the motherboard, then what else do i need to look for? like im debating weather to buy it from newegg.com or bestbuy (cuz bestbuy comes with the cables im pretty sure) and what's a free connector look like :p ~Catt

Go ahead and unplug the hard drive ribbon cable. You are looking for a cable that has a connector like the one you just unplugged in the middle along with the 2 on the ends.

Some of the OEM cables only have one connection on the end. Make sure yours has two, if not buy a new one, they are really cheap. Make sure you get an "80 pin" cable.
