I have a laptop and a pc. both belong to separate domains (laptop on domain x, pc on workgroup y). both run win 2000 professional. both have ethernet cards and can be connection via a cross-cable.

At present, the LAN connection icon does appear in the system tray. So the network is sensed. However, I cannot find the laptop in the "My Network Neighbourhood".

How do I go about configuring networking such that I can access data of the laptop from the pc ?

Please guide me.

P.S. I would like to make minimum / no changes to the configuration in my laptop.

try renaming the workgroup name to match the domain name. I have done this in my home setup with my laptop and server. My laptop contantly changes as it is used on several networks so i have not put it on the domain for that reason. by makeing the workgroup name match i can then see the network.

Map in IP form:

\\192.168.0.10\sharename

or whatever the IP is.

Thanks angerdriven and bcastner, for the quick response.

angerdriven, i did try configure the pc to be part of the same domain as the laptop instead of being part of a workgroup. however, windows 2000 tries to join me to the domain by validating this action with the domain name server which controls this domain. However, the domain name server is not controlled from the laptop, so joining the same domain fails. Am i missing anything here ?

bcastner, the laptop does not have a static ip, nor does the pc. then how do i do what you suggest ?

thanks again for your response, and looking forward to more guidance.

go to the control panel on the laptop and add a new profile that mirrors the profile on the pc (same username and password). this will give the pc access to the laptop, thus, show it on the network.
