I have a box with some problems I haven't encountered before.
Try to open Internet Explorer - nothing
try to open my computer - %THISDIRNAME%
When I try to run Windows Update I get the message "an active-x control on this page is not safe. Your current settings prohibit running unsafe controls on this page"

I have run Norton AntiVirus on another PC with this hard drive installed and it finds no viruses.

HELP!

What do you mean "Nothing" when you try to open IE? Do you get an error message or does the system lock up or what?

What do you mean by "%THISDIRNAME%" when you open My Computer?

The ActiveX message in IE used by WindowsUpdate is caused by your internet explorer security settings. Right click IE, choose properties, security tab, select "Internet Zone", choose "Custom Level" on Internet connection and make sure the ActiveX settings are set to run.

When I try to open Internet Explorer I double-click and nothing happens. It is like I never clicked it at all.

I tried to change the security settings just like you suggested and it crashes every time. As soon as I try click on the vertical slider bar I get an explorer error.

I thought I would try to remove IE and I can't find where to do it - I looked in add/remove - nothing. I went the windows setup tab in add/remove and there's an Internet section but it doesn't include IE.

Hi,
Have you looked in explorer to find the "Windows Update Setup Files" folder which will have your explorer setup files [maybe].

Also, have you tried to connect to the web throught windows explorer rather than internet explorer?

Regards.

Thanks for the quick repsonse. This is the first time I have used a forum to find an answer and I'm really impressed by the knowledge of the contributors.

You recommendation about check the folder for the settings is a great idea.

I found an MS knowledgebase article that talked about the specific error I was getting when I tried to change the security zone settings and it recommended I delete a series of registry key (anything that referenced "zones")

This, along with deleting the user's profile and recreating it solved the problem.

Thanks again!

Hello Rolf

Win98Userhas IMHO has hit on the problem, and your response I think confirms it; ................ You have an incorrect file association. What this means is that at some point in time the associatin between your PC's software and IE6.0 has been broken. It, therefore, does not take a genius to, work out the cure, i.e. re-make the associations, have a look at the FAQ's.

I don't for one minute run into problems about street addresses with the whole of the internet, and I recognise that most people have the right, and the ability to coach football screens on the net at hopefully good rates.

Kind regards

Phil
