I have a 8 GB scandisk as Drive K: but it does not show up under "Computer - Removable Disk: How come ?

Your help will be very much appreciated.

Does it work on another machine?

Have you tried another USB slot, try one of the rear loading slots?

Do other USB drives show up in the My Computer folder?


Use Device Manager and uninstall the USB root hubs that show on your machine now.

Reboot and let XP rediscover the ports.

If it doesn't show up under Computer, how did it get assigned a drive letter (K)? Does it show up in disc managment? (start, run, diskmgmt.msc)

because it was/is:

1. Formatted as a HDD. and the PC thinks that is what is attached and lists it under the Normal Partitions...

2. There are NO free DRIVE LETTERS available and thus is not mounted...

3. The drive bit the dust and is no longer functioning...

4. The USB port it is in is dead, so Windows does not see it at all...

Plug in USB drive wait for a few minutes
Go to Start menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

find the drive without a drive letter right click on it and left click Change Drive letters and Paths > Add > choose a drive letter


that will add the drive no problem and is the easiest fix
