i have a 2514 with 2 8 mb flash simms. can i load an IOS that requires 16 mb of flash onto it, or do i need to get a 16 mb flash? from what i can tell, i can't because the router treats each simm as independent storage.
You must make sure that the two 8 meg flash sticks are of the same manufacture. With the old 2500 series mother boards you must have identical ram in order for the flash to combine. If you boot the router and do a show flash or dir flash you will see two 8 meg flash if the Flash is different. If they are identical you can erase flash: and when you issue the show flash or dir flash you will see 1 flash with 16 meg total.
You are mistaken. The 2500 series will support 16 meg DRAM and 16 meg Flash. The only problem is that there is only 1 Flash slot so it has to be a 16meg Flash stick. Two 8 meg Flash sticks won't do the trick.
Actually, my 2514 has 2 slots and I have single 16mb PARTITION. When u do a sh ver, u'd see 2 8mb partitions, what you need to do is go into the configuration mode, and issue a router#(config)partition flash:1 16 command (check to see if your IOS supports the command). This will erase everything on the flash, or will ask you to wipe the contents of the flash, I can't remember now. In any case, that will give you a single 16MB partition.
