I have our existing environment, exchange2k/win2k and need to move it to another exchange2k/win2k.
I've never done this before...
Is this very hard, or time consuming?

What is the easiest way to move exchange infostore/active directory onto the new machine?

Is there a built in option that would make this easy?

Both machines are on the same domain, but the new one is replacing the old one, so I need the new server name to be the same as the old one (the old one is going away) when I finish.

If you're just moving your Exchange to new hardware, then look at the FAQ section for this forum.

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

all you need to do in setup another exchange server in the site, move the accounts to the new server, remove the old server once all accounts are moved.

if you need to keep the same server name, try this

So, join one exchange server to the other, let them sync up, and take the old one away?

Not entirely sure how to do that... if they are up and running on the same domain, both running exchange - will that automatically sync them up?

There's a little more to it than that. you need to migrate the system folders PF free/busy, OAB, that sort of thing.

Hrm...
Never done that before... will a restore of infostore not handle that?

If you check the like i posted, that will step you through putting in a new exchange server on new hardware and keeping the server name.

It seems like you might need some more knowledge about exchange. here is a very good resource that will help and is easy to find information.

It would be difficult to write a faq with every step involved without acctually doing it. Try to find the rest of the info for yourself.

Let's be very honest and realistic for a second.

If you have never done this before, and just now have to ask even the basic questions about it, it is a little late!

Please don't take this as bad as it sounds, but more to prevent you from a potential disaster.
A move, migration, upgrade has to be prepared long before.

All backup and contingency preocedures have to be covered up front.

If you are going ahead, be very very careful and don't plan anything the next following days.
At this point, all I can say is : good luck!
